I recently picked this from Amazon. I put it into my cars cd player. On my way to work, as a band director, I was pleasantly surprised. Great sound, sturdy performance, solid interpretation. I have yet to play it on the sacd player. But, Ihave a feeling it will be quite good. In the end, I like this ...

Outstanding performance. Maybe not quite Abbado. But, this is outstanding. Great music making!!!

OK-I am not sure if this recording assures Abbado's place in history. The recording team did an average job on this symphony. Abbado's interpretation was above average certainly. But, I have found Solti and Jansons even better. The SACD mix was OK-not great.

Let me start by saying I have owned Rostropovich (2 versions), DePreist (2), Jarvi, Ashkenazy, Haitink, Berglund, Bychkov and Mravinsky. The only versions I couldn't stand were both Rostropovich's. My wife and I have always loved this recording. This was a discovery on a trip to Michigan over ten years ago. The music store was playing it on the sound system and we immediately had to get it. The trumpet playing of Bud Herseth was monumental. Now, in SACD format, I can say the CSO and Reiner ...
