Have heard the multichannel (just 4 channels, BTW, but the center third of the orchestra and soundstage are very solid) version twice. This one is VERY good and every bit as good as MTT's other Mahler recordings. This concert recording sounds just a bit soft...lacking in detail...to me, due perhaps ... more |

I've quite enjoyed Ivan's recordings, but this one is not a keeper for me. The 1st and 2nd movements are simply under played, too casual, too...fast--or perhaps better said, not slow enough. I didn't even listen to the 3rd and 4th movements. Ivan seems not to LOVE this work as much as I do and seems ... more |

This is a wonderful disc of yummy music. I highly enjoyed all parts of all the works, especially the Parsifal construction. The orchestral playing is world-class.
Chandos's recording is a little closer than those we get from, for example, PentaTone and Channel Classics, but it's nicely spacious and ... more |

I quite enjoyed this performance of one of my desert-island faves.
Tonally, the recording is a bit strange in that the high strings have little harmonics to them--
IOW they're dark sounding, while the trumpets are quite the opposite and bright sounding. It's tough to balance tweeter levels that ... more |

I LOVE this work--it's definitely on my desert-island list--and I can enjoy varied versions of it--slow, fast, driven, leasurely. Altho the 1st movement of this one is a little faster than usual, I really enjoyed the whole performance for its energy, its drive without sounding too drinen or frantic ... more |
