Now that's what I'm talking about. Here's a disc that deserves all the stars given by previous reviewers. Smokey soul, blues, R&B...with heavy 'gospel' influences throughout. Mighty Sam and Co. deliver. Despite the DSD logo, "All tracks were recorded @ 30 ips direct to two track tape." Wow. Not ... more

Great albums are collections of great songs and inspiring performances. All of that is subjective, of course, but surely we can hold up some attempts at "art" against others and come to some relative judgements about their merits? Is this "the Ultimate" audio experience? Well, no. But it's very good. If I were to put together the "ultimate" SACD sampler, it would probably contain only DSD recordings, for one thing. I was perplexed as to why the sonics of this disc make such a different impression on me than on previous reviewers. The brass seems harsh and blatty on the "fff" sections - the high strings brittle.
