I debated for quite a while over whether or not to buy this SACD, as Iím not a great fan of Gergiev Ė nor is the Pathetique one of my favourite Tchaikovsky symphonies (I prefer the Fifth and First). The performances here are enjoyable if hardly revelatory. Haas is an aristocratic soloist and plays the C minor concerto with sovereign splendour throughout, although occasionally his handling of certain echt-Rachmaninovian moments of magic is a tad aloof. This is an SACD which I actually prefer in stereo rather than multi-channel, to be honest - I'll explain why later. I listened to this in the 3 channel SACD option (using the centre as well as the front left and right speakers) - this is possible as the recordings were originally made using 3 tracks.
