I suppose that it was only a matter of time until the Zinman/Tonhalle recording machine tackled the Mahler symphonies. I personally am not a fan of their Beethoven recordings. I feel that many other people have done the semi-HIP approach more successfully, most notably Mackerras on EMI Budget. ...

Ives' 2nd Symphony is one of those superb symphonies that few people are familiar with, and could be a regular staple of the repertoire if more people heard it. The catalog certainly does not need another Mahler recording. But an orchestra with a recording contract can not allow there to be a Mahler recording gap between it and its peers. The good news is that this is an excellent recording in all aspects, and that the Philadelphia Orchestra does not intend ...

Does the catalogue need another recording of the Tchaikovsky 5? Certainly not. There are a plethora of legendary, classic, and just all around good recordings of the symphony available. The Philadelphia Orchestra has recorded the symphony no less than 6 times prior, once per decade since the '40s. ...
