Performance:   Sonics:
This is one of my favorite pieces of modern orchestral music, and certainly one of my favorite Shostakovich compositions; I've purchased and listened to ten or so interpretations of it, including (IMHO) strong ones by Ashkenazy and Solti, and weaker ones by Caetani, Pletnev, Jansons, and others. I purchased this SACD despite it being an older recording, and being unavailable for any pre-sampling, because the only other version at the time of purchase that I could find on SACD (of which I'm a big fan) was by Caetani, whose rendition of the work was utterly off-putting to me, and I had read reviews suggesting adequate sonics and a wonderful interpretation on this one. Since then I've purchased SACDs of Pletnev and Gergiev conducting this work, both of which had top-notch sonics but in my opinion, inferior interpretations- which led me to ulitimately dump them.

In fact this recording, while not quite up to the audiophile standards of the newest releases is nevertheless acoustically fine and engaging- a good example of a worthwhile SACD remastering and re-release of a "historical work" of that era (the mid-70's)- and is more than compensated for by Sanderling's utterly sensitive and magical interpretation of the symphony. He really grasps its emotional interiority- by turns its demonic playfulness, rebelliousness, melancholy, elegiacal nature, and finally an atmosphere of repose.

HIGHLY recommended!
