Reviews: David Hazeltine: The Jobim Songbook In New York

Performance:   Sonics:
I was hoping to hear a modern recording of Bossa Nova as it was performed in the 1960s, but this release doesn't do that at all. While the style of the playing heard here isn't offensive at all, it is not what one would expect to hear, simply based on its title, The Jobim Songbook in New York. Instead, what you hear is what I would call Cocktail Lounge Music. The players are all of the highest caliber, indeed, but the music they present doesn't seem to be intended to be anything other than background music.

The sound quality is up to the high standards expected of the Chesky label, and the mic placement is such that it puts the listener at the table in that cocktail lounge closest to the performers. That is, while the music is decidedly low key, the sound is a bit up front and slightly bothersome. Hazeltine's piano sounds as if it is 20 feet wide at times, but timbre and attack are quite authentic.

Although this recording offers multi-channel playback, I have only a stereo player.
