Performance: Sonics: |
One of two Tommy Smith Linn SACD hybrids that I got through Audio Asylum. There are more than a few standards here, six of twelve being Ellington compositions and In A Sentimental Mood being one of my favorites.
This album is more slowly paced and the overall tone is along the lines of "Jazz for a rainy day or a relationship breakup." Still, if you're planning on cooking your lady (or man) a nice dinner then this is probably an album that should be playing when you take her to the promised land afterwards. The 'Barry White' of mellow jazz.
Sonics are excellent, as with the other Linn SACDs that I have and details can be heard in spades. Just don't expect your amps to be given a thorough workout on this one. Smith's tenor is full, thick and quivering and Billy Drummond's brush work is quite evident and appealing. Peter Washingtons bass and Kenny Barron's piano are both solid and somewhat subdued and do take a back seat to the sax and drums, in my opinion
Worth seeking out if you like slower, more moodier jazz.
Thanks for reading, Chris Garrett
