The sonics on this are great, the orchestra plays beautifully, the piano performance is too bizarre for words though. Almost random changes in dynamics, rushed phrasing with empty silences, he basically ignores the sheet music and annotations. The whole 3rd is played staccato and if a half note is called for he plays 2 quarter notes etc. He seems to be experimenting or more to the point doodling with the music as he performs it with no regard to whether the idea works or not.

It is interesting in a way but reminds me more of one of those all too typical jazz performances where the soloist sounds like he is cleaning the keyboards rather than trying to play anything anyone would have any interest in hearing (ok, not that bad, but you get the idea).

I bought this disc for two reasons: its DVD roots (wanted to hear something recorded this way), and the reviews here that pursuaded me that it might be interesting. Unfortunately, however, I find this very dissapointing. The piano playing is OK, but the orchestral playing is really pretty ordinary. The recording too is just so, so. Tempos are slow. Vitality is hard to find. For a modern, yet period-informed, version on SACD, Brautigam's cycle on BIS is way, way better in every possible regard.
