Overall, this is a pretty satisfying recording of the Mahler 1. While Orozco-Estrada doesn't offer any real insights, he never gets in the way of the music, weighing it down with fussy micromanagement. It's a straightforward, well executed and energetically played performance.

I only have two qualms: 1) the horns totally blow their loud trill towards the end of the first movement -- it sounds like one of the players takes a breath in the middle of it. It's a big enough gaffe that Iím surprised it wasn't fixed in the editing. 2) The stopped horns in the scherzo sound thin and puny.

Recorded sound is excellent. Besides all the typical superlatives that people throw at great sounding recordings -- warm, deep bass, realistic timbres, etc., the achievement with this recording is that the engineers captured the ambiance of the hall. The recording reproduces a real sense of the space that the instruments are playing in.

The one mark against the sound is that the front left channel spills over into the left rear -- at times it sounds like the horns and cymbals are coming out of it. It's only noticeable if you sit left of center of the center channel, and can be eliminated by adjusting the levels on that speaker or by just sitting right of center.

Given that Orozco-Estrada doesn't begin to challenge any of the great recordings of the Mahler 1, (Gielen, Bertini, Kubelik, Boulez, Bernstein, etc.) it's hard to recommend this recording. But if you're looking for a well played version in fantastic sound, this is it.
