Performance:   Sonics:
It was never clear to me why these early sonatas are treated as isolated from the venerable 32. For me Beethoven wrote 35 sonatas. I heard them for the first time played by Ursula Dütschler on a Walter-copy and they were charming light pieces and real sonatas but I did not feel the need to hear them over and over. But the definite defence to consider these sonatas as Beethovens first fruits in the genre are Brautigams performances on this SACD nr 9 !
To begin with, as written in the text, these sonatas can stand the comparison with Mozart's creations at that age.
And the way Brautigam plays them... One hears pure energy, the exuberance of the young Ludwig, Brautigam finds phrases no one else saw before.
A breathtaking but absolute correct speed as if a technically perfect young boy, born in 1770 is playing on this SACD gives this listening an extra dimension.
Brautigam has the perfect medium, the Stein-copy by McNulty, a copy from 1788. This one proves that the piano's were at every stage in the history magnificent instruments. A bright and sharp tone and the subtle decay serve the music as no other instrument can.
As written in so many reviews, Brautigam is setting new standards.
The other works on this SACD are clearly of a minor quality, they did not grasp me, but... they are Beethoven's (maybe not all of them...).
SACD-quality ? As the previous 8, can not be better...
So, I am waiting for nr 10 !
