I enjoy the music of Fairport Convention and am a fan of English folk music so I wanted to give this band a try. I sampled some of their music on line and bought the shm sacd.
This band, a contemporary of Fairport has a slighly different style and different musicianship. Pentangle is a hybrid of folk/rock/ bluegrass and a touch of jazz. They are entirely acoustic from the guitars to the bass and this is a nice touch when listening to this album.

From the get go its obvious that this 1968 album is a fabulous recording..very life like with a "you are there" presence.
The vocals of Miss McShee are excellent in their clarity with an almost pleading or mournful quality. Vocals are very prominent.
The band is terrific as well and put in some surprising energy during each and every song. There are constant surprises with the dynamic range of this recording as instruments suddenly spring forth from the midrange with powerful drum fills or twanging guitar strings. All instruments sound very organic and real. And the textures of strings and drum skins/cymbals are very palpable. At times the slapping of the acoustic bass is heard as well as the reverberation of the kick drum. At times the acoustic bass can be very powerful and deep. Its the little things that make this album exceptional and never boring..even though its a mellow ride.

There are two instrumentals on this disc and both are very good. But the last track is exceptional with tremendous dynamic range and powerful playing that springs out of the mix. This track is almost an assault to the audio senses with all the jumping forth of the different instruments. A sudden splatter of drum work or deep grooved bass runs shock the listener. And at one point the band screams "hehaw" and its almost like they are in the room with the listener. Its a great example of the stereo imaging and what makes it so special. It really is surprising the amount of musicianship and talent evident on this disc.
Yeah......I really love this album.

The Japanese Tech should be commended for doing...and this seems to be a habitual occurence.....a fantastic job yet again. As with all the very best Shm-Sacd's this one has certain audio traits that are to be prized.

A wonderful album and a great Dsd transfer from an excellent tape source. It does not sound at all like a recording 43 years old.

Plat it very loud.

Highly recommended.

This is simply one of the best SA-CD/SHMs I have heard. This is one of the best recordings of its kind and the sound quality here is mind blowing! The way the instruments shine through is amazing! It is almost like they jump right out at you and say hello, how you doing! I own the Castle re-issue and there is no comparison but for $50, it sounds the way I expected and then some! I know you have to be careful buying these as the sound quality is all over the place, but this is as good as these can sound in my opinion!
