Just kicked this off so we may ogle the cover. Lovely! That's how Finland feels.

Just as the wonderful music on this very well recorded disc needs to be heard in hi res.
To be fully appreciated the covershot needs to be watched at high resolution on a computer screen or as a bigger print than puny little cd size.
I hope you won't be too disappointed though,if it turns out that the shot was actually taken at a little stream somewhere in Sweden.
The photographer lives less than an hour from me and unlike me, he works his home territory very well indeed.
But yes, very nice covershot and the music and recording and interpretation are absolutely top quality too.

Never judge a book or an SACD by its cover.

I'm wondering why this isn't up on e-classical yet. Do BIS delay the download releases to come after the (SA)CD?

No, not after. Basically together with. We want to give our "physical" distributors a fair chance.

This SACD was - exceptionally - released temporarily on eClassical around Feb 1, when the Minnesota Orchestra had a special concert to celebrate their Grammy Nomination for the Sibelius 2+5. Then it was withdrawn and will be re-released on March 22 - a week from today.

OK, so I'm not going crazy (I seem to remember reading about its availability somewhere, but then couldn't find it).

I bought this on Arkiv about two weeks ago, so it was available there as well. It is very, very good. I was wondering why there wasn't any buzz here about it; now I know.

The Fourth is superbly done, but I find the First just too aggressive, like his Lahti version. Some sense of grandeur is lost.

I also feel like the first is at a faster tempo than I prefer.

I like the 1st very much. Not so much of the old "indebted to Tchaikovsky" canard, more bracing and Nordic, more of a piece with Sibelius' whole body of work. To each his own.
