No Japanese holiday that I know of lands on March 17, but March 20 is a holiday.

Yeah, strange, I wonder why their website said it was holiday today... Apropos Spain in the 1930s, I notice in my mom's old U.K. passport from that period the notation: "Not valid for travel to Spain." Travel to the U.S.S.R., on the other hand, apparently was allowed. History in real time ...

I do not believe tape recorders were used at that time yet, it was still direct-to-disk 100%. Awesome analog sound! 6 stars!

Welcome back to terra firma, FD.

BTW, does that DVD~A of Macal's Dvorak (multichannel?) come with a sushi roll?

And does FD~Bay take Pay Pal?

Thanks, Rammie.

And of course I take paypal as I do sell things on Ebay. I'm not going to charge any more than what I paid for it by the way. I'm not trying to be greedy in any way whatsoever.

I officially paid 3600 yen for it with tax.

1935 in Germany BASF/AEG joint venture Magnetophon. First serious recording in 1936 was LSO in Europe with Beecham. Casals recorded most of his cello suites in Paris in 38/39 when he was in exile from Franco's Spain. I have no idea of the provenance of the Casals. They are noisy, some have surface noise and some seem to have tape hiss. Who knows. Depending on the tape formulation tape would not necessarily be an improvement until the availability of better tape oxides which was late 1939.

No, this is fairly advance notice yet. Keep an eye on the http://www.northstarconsult.nl site.

Doesn't matter when Magnetophon was introduced. HMV was using wax well until 1940s.

This appears to have been re-released on SACD by Warner.
Note new catalogue # WPGS-50110/1

I'd ordered this late last year under the EMI TOGE numbers and was informed last month it was deleted. Then last week it popped up on the HMV jp site with the new catalogue #. My copy is listed as 'ready' though I've preordered with a Karajan Strauss SACD due later.

Maybe you (or someone) could tabulate all the changed serial numbers and email them to me. I can't see this warrants an entirely new set of database entries here but maybe the existing entries could be edited (with appropriate reference to the old EMI version) and with the links where to buy them updated.

The best source is the HMV Japan site - type "wpgs sacd" into the search box and 77 titles appear, all with the new catalogue number listed. However HMV are quoting the original release dates rather than a re-release date, so perhaps Warners have simply reclaimed EMI Japan's remaining stocks rather than formally re-releasing them?

Thanks, I'll look into it. I note however that amazon.co.jp is listing (at least the disc in question) as a regular CD. I'm wary of relying on information from (any) vendor sites. I couldn't find these serial numbers yet on the label site.

This remastering is marvellous. Casals fans shall not miss these SACDs.
