Dammit! Your enthusiasm is beginning to get through to me. Having ignored Kitajenko's "Manfred" before maybe it's time for a re-think as a decent alternative to Macal's bombastic and overly self-confident wanderer is long overdue even if we have been half-promised a more meditative Pletnev pilgrimage.

Placing my order now....

Tchaikovsky: Manfred Symphony - Kitajenko is outstanding. I have reservations over some of the "normal" symphonies but their Manfred is just gripping from beginning to end.

To me the best performances of the "normal" symphonies are the 1st and the 5th and the sound is wonderful in all of the series.

John,

Great review! I'm so looking forward to this and the 4th. In all my years of collecting Tchaikovsky symphonies, this set has been the most satisfying.

Affirmation of our own prejudices isn't cause for celebration. Are you sure your own enthusiasm for this series is not hampering your own judgement?

Incidentally, I loved his 'Manfred" despite my prejudices so thanks for your insistence of it's merits. The best version of late IMO is Jurowski's with the London Phil but alas their own label pulled the plug on SACD long ago, more's the pity.

You win some but it is also possible to lose as well...

Confirmation of what I listen to when it comes to a composer I have spent the greater part of my life listening to with multiple sets of RBCD and at least 3 sets of SACD tells me that Kitajenko's Tchaikovsky is one of the best sounding and performed Tchaikovsky series ever.

So now all that's left is 4...and then possibly a box release...

It would be interesting to see if he does any of the ballets after the symphonies.

Perhaps a bit small minded of me, but...
I love the large tam-tam smash in Sleeping Beauty.
Now could we have the Hamlet Fantasy Overture please?
