I have tried to search for this BIS disc (#BIS #2012) elsewhere on this site to write a review, but haven't been able to find it. My copy arrived yesterday, and without gushing, I have to say that this is one of the very best recordings of Rachmaninoff piano works I own (and I own quite a few). Yevgeny Sudbin is a flat-out wonder. His playing is electrifying, and the Singapore Orchestra, under the direction of Lan Shui is beautifully lyrical when it should be, and explosively exciting with all crescendos and fortissimos.

I've only listened to the disc once, but intend to spend some more time today listening to it again, and at a higher volume (circumstances forbade me to play it at a "realistic" level yesterday!). The performances all around are just stunning, and the recorded sound, at least to me, is some of the best I've ever heard.

For those to whom it matters, this is a 96KHZ/24 bit recording, but I have other BIS recordings done at 48KHZ/24 bit that don't sound that much different (notably Dvorak Symphonies 7 and 8). Still, to those who shun BIS for not playing the numbers game, and who haven't listened to a BIS recording for that reason, this disc deserves their attention.

Simply outstanding in all respects. Bravo to all at BIS, and especially to Sudbin and Lan Shui for their combined talent. Most highly recommended!

I can't find reference to this title anywhere, even on BIS.SE. Is that a 2013 release?

Yes. I bought it through Arkivmusic.com, which, for whatever reason, isn't associated with this website. Too bad.

Another must have Sudbin performance, curious about the Sym. 1, my all time favorite performance is an old RBCD, Ashkenazy/RCO, a truly explosive performance particularly the last movement, let’s see how this new recording stacks up against that benchmark recording.

+1; Ashkenazy's Symphonic Dances is also nonpareil, IMO.

Bissie - when can we expect this recording to become more widely available? Can't see it anywhere yet, except Arkiv...

Cheers

Jon

Third plug for Ashkenazy/RCO. Wonderful in every respect. Not quite as great, but glorious from an SQ point of view is the DG Pletnev. Looking forward to this.

It appears that Robert has fallen behind in getting his SACD's entered here. There's also a Hindemith SACD of music for violin (sonatas, concerto, solo sonata) that is recently released.

Having just checked bis.se, I think Bissie's officially up-to-date here. Bissie is fastidious in his logging new discs & even when I am "unofficially" aware of new releases from other channels, I respect his desire to manage when his products are listed here.

I know other labels are more than happy for fans to list their products in a more relaxed fashion - each to their own & I am happy with both approaches.

Hi emaidel, the title is listed here already. Eager to hear your first hand review :)

No, I haven't. As a matter of fact, I was 2 days early. Our official release date is the 10th in every month. By that time, we have had the SACD:s in stock for 1-2 months, and sent out the review copies to our distributors. But we do not advertise them on our own homepage until we are satisfied that most distributors already have them in stock. I also enter them on this site on the 10th, but, since that happened to be on a public holiday here, as was Thursday, I did it on Wednesday.

I assure you, we know what we are doing. It isn't funny for anyone to see the SACD on any site and then looking high and low for it, if it isn't already in the local stock. Like happened here.

Robert
