Presumably these are re-releases of the old Exton recordings but this one I do not remember. Presumably Exton canned the project literally as the set was never completed. Nor was the excellent Haydn series.

Alas.. another wonderful series that ended all too soon.

His performance of No.31 "Hornsignal" is one of my favorites!

Haydn: Symphonies Nos. 31, 72 & 73 - Jaap van Zweden

Hmm, it's a Northstar recording (see its logo at top left of the jacket), so this issue is very much a Northstar/Turtle/Challenge product, as is the new Bruckner 3.

Who did the Exton's?

Not sure, but the Exton recordings aren't listed in the extensive discography on Northstar's website.

JPC says the 6th is a 2012 recording, and the 3rd and 8th on Challenge are from 2011.

Bruckner: Symphony No. 3 - van Zweden
Bruckner: Symphony No. 8 - Jaap van Zweden

"Jaap van Zweden is currently releasing the cycle of Bruckner symphonies with the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic for Octavia and Challenge Records International, with symphonies 2, 4, 5, 7 and 9 already released to great critical acclaim. This is the 8th Symphony!" (from the JPC product page)

The Octavia/Exton recordings are from 2006/2007.

Confirmation above and in the booklet that van Zweden's Bruckner survey is being recorded by Challenge Classics & Octavia, so guess this means that Challenge took over the contract to complete the series with NorthStar?

This 6th is pretty smoothly played, beautifully recorded without undue spotlighting and a more than adequate rival to the acclaimed Janowski survey on Pentatone. Forced to choose, I couldn't so pleased to have both. Only the First to go by my reckoning?

Things can only become more complicated it seems as Jarvi shows every sign of completing a further set on Red Seal and dammit they're darned good as well - at a price.

Meanwhile it seems that Octavia are focussing more and more on Japanese performers and ensembles but so far I have resisted the temptation to bite, high price and poor availability sometimes has it's benefits.

I have sampled these and I much prefer Bosch on Corvielle to either of them - I recommend his cycle.

The Paavo Järvi/Frankfurt Radio Symphony cycle underway on RCA is indeed terrific, with 5, 7 and 9 already out and 4 just announced. The MCH SACDs are superb, as are the performances.
