but actually a suck out around the 220Hz mark.

What could be the explanation for this?

Did the engineer try to remove the noise, but it remains audible at some places?

That noise is not an exact note but fairly wide range machine sound, which is difficult to filter out without touching the musical signal.

It is so quiet thought, that most people would never notice it.

1.if you restrict your sample to the silent portions.

2. And did you analyze a double-DSD file? I notice that the ultrasonic noise that's a part of every DSD recording is shifted way off to the right, and I thought this was only possible with double or quad DSD.

1.I did restrict my sample to a quiet phase at the 4 minute mark as I said.

2. No it's not dsd128 it's the dsd from the stereo layer converted to PCM 192/32. There's no musical content over 15k on this recording. Ignore anything in the inaubible range.

3.There is no kazoo sound, neither is it a tissue and comb sound, it's as we have been saying, machine related rumble.

Yes, I can hear the machine-related rumble (maybe an AC unit or traffic). And then, added to that, is the buzz/hum at circa 220 hertz, obviously caused by an equipment problem the engineer chose to ignore or failed to notice. It's even audible at Linn's website (as I noted).

Ha ha. I had a feeling the engineer would be a rather young man, and not one of the old crusty coots who would never put his name on such technical sloppiness. Sure enough. I have a theory: after clicking "record," he immediately whipped out his iWhatever and began to furiously update his Facebook whilst texting his lulz to his BFFs, so he never noticed what was happening. I'm just not surprised at all.

Have to disagree with Hiredfox on this one. Bryan is, no doubt, an accomplished flautist, but fails to make the most of the lyricism in the Rouse (compare, e.g., Carol Wincenc on Telarc RBCD) or to adequately characterize Syrinx (compare Pahud on EMI).

Well, fluttertongue, I have waited more than a year for either an explanation of your smearing in Post 12 or an apology.

Can't you be honest enough to do one of the two?

Robert

Hear my words that I might teach you, take my arms that I might reach you.'
But my words like silent raindrops fell,
And echoed, in the wells of silence."

I regret possibly inducing all of you to revisit this issue, but is this business of the mechanical hum enough to keep prospective purchasers like me away? The sonics have gotten good reviews in the UK press, but the Brits are always wont to support their own….

Other than the hum, the sonics are rock-em sock-em good -- the UK press isn't fibbing about that. The hum ruins any pleasure I might have otherwise got from this recording, but opinions vary, QED. I'd suggest going to Channel Classics' website and listening to the end of the 2nd movement and beginning of 3rd movement of Rouse's concerto to see whether you can tolerate the hum or whether you can hear the hum at all -- many folks can't, QED. So it might not even be an issue for you in any way anyways.
