I just got Wagner: Das Rheingold - Janowski and Wagner: Tristan und Isolde - Janowski.
I haven't become fully acquainted with them yet, but so far... I find the performance of Rheingold engagingly dramatic and well sung. And it sounds great in Mch.
I plan to buy Die Walkure too plus Tristan. Last night I was listening to Das Rheingold with Janowski - I like the performance and, as you say, it sounds terrific in multichannel. Had to turn up the volume a little...

I have to turn up the volume quite a bit, too. Then, the sound really blooms, doesn't it!! I noticed this with other SACDs of Wagner's complete operas, such as Gergiev's Walkure, Haenchen's Ring, Bychkov's Lohengrin, etc... It certainly is the opposite of harpsichord recordings, which are usually so loud!! ;-)
Anyway, we are having a banner year with Wagner in Mch. I am relishing every glorious moment, act and scene of it!!

I haven't gotten to the Rheingold or Walküre yet, but check out Janowski's Tannhäuser, which I think is just outstanding.

Actually I'm a newbie to all this, therefore I plan to get the totality of one "Ring" series and become comfortable of it before purchasing another.
I believe most of you lot know of which it is, when I refer to "one Ring series". : )
The new Gergiev disc is first class with excellent sound, on balance probably better than Janowski so don't just dive into Janowski because there are more of them, Gergiev will complete The Ring in time.

That's probably a good idea. You have plenty of time to get other performances. And there is a whole bunch of older ones to explore: Krauss, Keilberth, Furtwangler, Solti, Bohm, Karajan, Leinsdorf... Just to name a few. If you get into this music, you'll probably want to check some of these out.
But it's good to have some fresh versions... And Mch sound brings a whole new dimension to this music. I for one am loving it!! :)
