I just noticed in the only review posted thus far of this release that the author finds the use of surround channels to be "unnaturally prominent" - sounds promising after all ;)

Heard the Mahler 2nd last night as fausto wanted to know how I rated the multichannel mix. Well, Derek (windhoek) may have answered our question.
It's not discreet but the surrounds are unmistakably not ambience but more a reinforcement of the fronts.
My argument, if you're going to make the surrounds this prominent why not record the album discreetly in the first place.
I award the Zander M2 an 8 out of 10 for SQ in multichannel.
The Performance was solid and heartfelt and my rating is a 9!

Cheers Ralph, it sounds like it's a good performance regardless and a small but noticeable step towards a discrete m/c mix. It might not be much, but I'll take :)

Thanks for the "review." Will try this one (in stereo).

I'm ripping the discs right now for playback from my Mac Mini although I just couldn't help play a snippet (a 7 minute snippet!) to hear how discrete the mix was and as Ralph says, it's certainly more than ambient although not full on discrete ala Tomita. Regardless, it sounds like a performance/recording I will enjoy. Will update later...

I just finished listening to the m/c mix (in 4.0 as per my speaker setup) and although it's certainly more discrete than most classical surround mixes, where ambiance is the standard approach, it's only more so by a tad. If I had to rate the dynamic of the m/c mix, I'd give it 3/10 - not quite matching the 10/10 of Tomita's Planets (Ultimate Edition), but an improvement on 1/10 ambient surround mixes nevertheless.
What I can say for sure though is I really enjoyed the performance/recording! I haven't listened to the stereo version so can't compare it to that, but compared to the two other stereo-only versions I have (Mehta BPO and Michael Tilson Thomas), I think Zander's is the performance I've enjoyed most. It might well be even if the ears don't detect a great deal of discrete channel dynamics, my emotive self does because I'm struggling to find reasons to say it isn't the best version I've heard to date. For me, it's a winner!
