Gotta agree--- them boys is some mean pickers! Love their Vivaldi, so I'm sure their Bach will be very fine.

Oh my, yes this looks good. I'm a bit confused about the inclusion of Prelude, Fugue & Allegro BWV 998 and Suite in E minor BWV 996: those are originally solo lute--possibly keyboard pieces, so I wonder if each plays one of them? There aren't enough notes for two guitars, although they can keep one guitarist plenty busy! (I'm learning Prelude, Fugue & Allegro BWV 998 at the moment.)

This new disc from the Katona Twins arrived today. Superb playing, but the sound is disappointing: in multi-channel mode, it sounds as if one is standing between two huge guitars, rather than having two normal guitars placed in front of the listener as one would encounter in concert. Thus, I have to listen to it in stereo. For some reason, the last few Channel Classics SACDs have had far too much direct sound in the rear channels. (Yes, I know I've mentioned it before, and I will again until they use the rear channels purely for ambience; either that or I quit buying their products!) Anyway, it's still a worthwhile purchase.

When recording the multichannel tracks, I set the microphones as a balance between the direct and ambient sound. I imagine one sitting around the 5th row (for a recording like the two guitars one cannot speak of ambience only because guitars do not have the dynamics to begin with to have much reflections to create any ambient sounds.) No surround should have ambience only (except if you want to set the listener in the back row, but then you would get no dynamics) This combination of reflections seems to work as I an others have been doing this since the beginning of the multichannel.
On setting the balance for the SACD, I set the levels to have the surround speakers to be just noticeably audible. I have no control over how listeners have set their system of course. If you are hearing two huge guitars, then maybe you are listening too loudly. If it is too loud for your system, can't you set these surrounds lower?
The stereo is made from a AB setup with a MS technique in the middle. This MS is just added a little to add depth and color. The boys were sitting across from each other at about 4 to 5 feet. It could not have been more natural in this wonderful church with wooden floors I used in Holland

I don't want to have to go the setup menu to adjust the levels for individual recordings! For about 95% of my SACDs, the default level of the rear speakers is fine. On this recording, the rear level is well beyond "just noticeably audible," and Geohominid notes in his review "a surprisingly active part for surround channels in multichannel mode," so I am not alone in such a perception.

FWIW, I consider having "active" rear speakers a good thing. Reckon I'll get this release and see for myself.

My 2p. : )

I've done some experimenting in the last few days and discovered that the imaging/rear level issues are far worse when I use my Oppo 105 via m-ch analog connections. Via HDMI, the issues are less noticeable, and reduced to yet a greater degree on my Sony 5400ES, although still a tiny bit more prominent for my taste; thus, I still prefer listening to it in stereo.

Anyway, Jared, a question: Does just one of the twins play both BWV 996 and 998? If not, who plays which piece? Thanks.

You are correct that these two pieces are played by one guitar. No if I could only remember who was playing which piece......

I hear a slight difference in tone and style between the two, but whoever it is, the playing is fantastic!
