As you might expect, I ordered this from the CC site the first day it was available. I'll let you know my first impressions once it arrives......

Certainly a must but I miss the old days when he would excite and surprise us with his next choice of repertory. Seems to have become much more mainstream and predictable of late. Past 60 maybe he's settling into older age?

I agree but it is hard to ignore past successes. Still, he told me a couple of years back that this would not be a complete Mahler series as he would do only the ones he chooses. I am wondering when he will stop (although I am not encouraging him to do so).

Since he may have some contractual restrictions from his Philips days, I'd like to hear his take on Janacek and Martinu as well as more mainstream R. Strauss. The early Beethoven symphonies he did with the RCO were marvelous and, having heard him rehearse the Bach B Minor Mass, I am curious about how the assembled parts sounded.

I liked the Fischer of a few years ago but really, another damned Mahler 5th and from an increasingly anodyne conductor?

I may be biased having spent a week at the sessions for this production but, imho this release is not at all, another "damned Mahler 5th".
On the contrary, for me via my systems both via my SOTA Headphones and quite decent 28 hz to 24 khz +- a few dB Electrostatic speakers and 300 watts pre and power amp combo rather, a very realistic SOTA pure DSD recording with a superbly coherent and pinpoint accurate soundstage with both depth and width and tremendous power and definition.
Kal used the word "spectacular" earlier here and although my speaker system is not quite the equal of his B&W 800D based surround system I can still agree with what he said.
Like him I have yet to hear the SACD.
But when I listen to the dff masterfiles with closed eyes and via speakers I can easily visualize the BFO as they played live that memorable week last September in Budapest.
It is also, again imho,an equally stunningly well played release of a MAJOR symphonic work by a conductor who is anything but anodyne.
And unlike many other recordings made today it shows little resemblance with the "patchwork post-production spotmiked approach" put together from 100's or even 1000s of takes reconstructed in digital no man's land some major labels release.
I was there and I can honestly say that this is about as close to the real thing and a true concert hall experience as one can expect with today's technology.

It may not be to every ones taste performance wise,or even recording wise, you need a good system to appreciate it's realism, and to be quite honest there are a couple of bars where imho even the BFO doesn't quite hold up against Karajan's "Perfektions Orchester" the BPO.

But the BFO and Fischer fully compensate for a few occasional very minor imperfections with the most sincere truly dedicated really long even full movements takes and playing I have experienced of this MAJOR symphonic work by one of the greatest composers of the last century.
A must indeed.
Chris just back home from two weeks in sunny Greece.

I hope there will be at least a ninth as promised and hopefully a Mahler 7 too from Fischer and the BFO.
Regarding R Strauss I made the mistake of downloading a recent R Strauss Till Eulenspiegel and Don Juan, artificially recorded in digital no man's land by DGG before going to Greece.

Don Juan and Till Eulenspiegel from the glorious acoustic of the Palace of the Arts, in pure DSD,now that would be something I would look forward to as well as their take on Bach's B-Minor Mass.

I do not trust my memory enough to tell you the Mahler symphony he said he would not do. Sorry.

As for the Strauss, the Fischer/BFO Josephs Legende was gorgeous, if boring.

A Strauss Zarathustra from these forces would be nice.

Me too!

It would be especially nice if the Martinu viola concerto could be paired with the Bartok one. And done properly, Martinu's cello concerti are really wonderful.

My post was not really a question more a hint of possible future releases.
I don't think he will record the 8th nor the 3rd. But the 9th is quite possible.
And if Hein and Jared can convince him the 7th would be nice indeed.
Regarding the "gorgeous,if boring",Josephs Legende good as it is, it is not R Strauss' most inspired work imo.
But yes it is certainly gorgeous and very well played and recorded.

I would love a Tod und Verklärung coupled with Don Juan and Till Eulenspiegel from Fischer and the BFO though.
