This is my new favorite SA-CD. Full review to follow. The sound and playing are outstanding!

dear robstl, Do you have the Mandelring's Schubert SACD? how does this compare (I found them very light on emotionally, with nowhere near the depth and presence of other quartets, such as the Q'o Italiano). Regards, B.

I don't have their Schubert disc. I think there's plenty of depth, appropriate for the content, on the Shostakovich disc. My question is whether or not they'll have enough depth for some of the later, intense quartets (like 8, 13, etc). Hopefully, we'll find out soon!

Thanks for the review. I confess I didn't like the sound of this disc at first listen. But a couple days later, it sounded beautiful... job stress I guess. Let's move on to vol. 2, 3, 4....

I grump here now and again, about quartets up-sized to Wiener Phil dimensions, but if they have to do such things, then I sincerely wouldn't mind an sacd recording of the Chamber Symphony version of Kbaptet No. 8 by the Amsterdam Sinfonietta (or Aulis Sallinen's "Some Aspects of Peltoniemi Hintrik's Funeral March" for orchestra).
