Amazon.co.jp has new stock of this.
Furthermore, I was able to get a cheaper airmail option for this, compared to Japazon's remaining stock of the EMI Furtwängler SACDs, which they refuse to post overseas for single layer SACDs, and charge outrageous express postage for the rest without cheaper options.

I ordered this M6 in November from the HMV site when they had a 15-20% sale of the SHM SACDs, but I recently received an email from them to say this and a couple of the Karajan light music ones were deleted.
Note that over 60 Karajan CDs are due to be reissued in Japan, but these are SHM CDs. Confusingly, several which have appeared as SHM SACDs, such as those I mentioned above, are priced in the 3500-4000 yen mark. These also aren't SACDs but marketed as 'Platinum SHM CDs'!

Thanks for the tip, just bought it -- without any problem from Amazon.fr since I live in France.

It's much cheaper on CDjapan. The Amazon.fr offering is from a Marketplace seller, it's being shipped from Japan. You save a few Euro on shipping costs, but you are as likely to pay customs tax.

So far, it never happened to me from the Marketplace, only when I ordered myself directly from non-EU vendor sites (... and CDJapan is one of them).

Does anyone know the source for this release? Is it from the original analog master tapes?

Yes. 2012 DSD mastering from the original master tape by the Emil Berliner Studios

I've only heard this performance once, way back when it had just been released and I was in the throes of a youthful Karajan-phobia (all Karajan, all the time had begun to grate).

Now that it's available in a DSD remastering, however, it may be time to revisit itů. How does it compare with the SACD competition? (My only SACD version to date is Haitink/CSO.)

I have had this SACD now for a few years, very fine sound and performance, especially the Andante (played third as was the erroneous practice then).

But there are now a great many excellent M6s on SACD, including Nott's which I particularly like.

If you have Haitink with the CSO, that in my view is not one of his better Mahler recordings - too comfortable and beautiful sounding. M6 as easy listening?

Also I would recommend the superb recent RBCD from Harding with the Bavarian RSO - that is a wonderful recording, especially the Scherzo and Finale. Very muscular with ear-catching brass timbres from the orchestra.

Hard to believe that there are 20 or so SACD versions of this piece floating around. I think the front-runners are Mahler: Symphony No. 6 - San Francisco/Michael Tilson Thomas, Mahler: Symphony No. 6 - Fischer, and Mahler: Symphony No. 6 - Nott, but there's a lot of options out there.

Also, I didn't realize that my favorite version, Mahler: Symphony No. 6, R. Strauss: Metamorphosen - Barbirolli, is on SACD. No way I'm paying over $1,000 for it, though.
