Hi guys, first post on this super site.

I've just purchased my first SACD player and it's arriving soon, a second hand Sony XE-670 player, I can't wait. It's not coming for a few days so I have time to research decent amps/speakers and I would appreciate any suggestions.

I'm not technically minded on the subject, although I do want the best sound possibly so my 5.1 SACDS sound as best as they can.

I presume I need an amp capable of processing DSD and a set of decent speakers. Budget for these two - I'd say £400 or so. However, happy to go higher if needed.

The player only has optical outputs, no HDMI.

Thanks in advance:)

Welcome to SACD net Fraser! Since your SACD player does not have HDMI output, you will be forced to use the multichannel analog outputs for your SACD playback (the optical output only works for RBCD - not SACD). This limitation means that you will need an A/V integrated amp that has multichannel analog inputs.

My advice is to buy something inexpensive and save your money for a better system down the road. Good luck!

Thanks mate! Appreciate such a quick response. Can you suggest a decent A/V integrated amp for me?

Cheers:)

Have a go at Richer Sounds and see if any of the Denon AVR meet your requirements:

I cannot make a specific recommendation for an A/V receiver other than to say that make sure it has 5.1 multichannel analog inputs on the back so you can use your SACD player properly. I believe many of the current crop of A/V receivers are lacking such inputs in favor of HDMI so buy carefully.

BTW, I took a quick look at the AV units from Lain's link - NONE of lower price units have 5.1 analog inputs. Sigh. I'm sorry to say it but I would suggest you sell the Sony SACD player and get one that had HDMI out so you can mate it with today's crop of AV receivers.

That doesn't fill me with confidence:( I was looking at the Sony STR-DE875 which has a 5.1 connection... hopefully that would do the trick?

Yes, that would work.

Thanks man, will look into the HDMI options but this may have to do me for now...

Have a look at the Sony BDP-S5100.

It's last year's model so you should be able to get it for a good price.

Plus, it decimates DSD bitstream to 176.4 kHz PCM via HDMI and plays multi-channel FLAC via USB port.
