As far as speakers are concerned have a look at the Quad lite system (5.1) which are around on ebay Uk most of the time at bargain prices (probably under £300). Quad quality is above its price and nicely finished too. The L range is a step up but would work with the Lite Sub if you were to upgrade in the future.

It's last year's model so you should be able to get it for a good price.
Plus, it decimates DSD bitstream to 176.4 kHz PCM via HDMI and plays multi-channel FLAC via USB port.
That's a great option, thanks man. Is there a good 5.1 DSD capable amp out there which would suit this player? I know I'm asking a lot of questions but I'm honestly lost in all the options out there :S Cheers.

Sadly no. However until you're able to afford an AVR such as the Denon AVR-X4000, the PCM output of the BDP-S5100 will be almost as good.
Frankly I really can't tell the difference between PCM and DSD output from my BDP-S790 to my AVR-3313, which is the immediate predecessor to AVR-X4000.
I would get a good, cheap Denon AVR and continue to save until you can afford something better.

-1.
Get a Denon and be happy. You will be much happier with a Denon than a Sony or Onkyo, or other such AVRs.

Frankly, this isn't the place for such provocative posts. It's inappropriate.
If you want to do that, start your own thread.

Strong opinions aside, I've decided to pursue the Sony BDP-S5100 with it's DSD streaming ability, I'm sourcing a suitable AV just now, thanks again for all your help.
Can't wait to listen to all my SACDS, hidden gems which I've never heard in all their glory!

That sounds like a smart decision Fraser. Happy listening!

To clear up some confusion, it's a myth that you need a DSD capable AVR to enjoy SACD. It's a nice option to have, but PCM conversion over HDMI sounds quite good as well.
