I can't quite understand the extreme variations in judging the SQ of this pressing. To me this disc's reproduction is right on and VERY realistic.

Something very strange here.

The top end is juiced. Listen to the original CD or LP and it will become obvious. Not sure what source was used for the SACD.

I've had and/or heard most previous pressings of this title including hearing some 1st gen repros of the original masters (albeit many years ago) and this particular one we are discussing sounds real close except for the bottom end that lacks the depth and low end dynamic sound the tape had. I guess we hear things quite differently.

Greetings ladies and gentlemen.

I truly believe that every reviewer should be aware that their own stereo system has a profound impact on sound quality.

Since a lot of what we hear is not only the influence of our own personal tastes but also the components one uses and the synergy between them. i CANT TELL YOU HOW SMALL INCREMENTAL CHANGES TO MY STEREO SYSTEM HAS MADE A WORLD OF DIFFERENCE to the final sound.
When I purchased my first system it was bright, boomy and edgy. Little by little I made certain tweaks, lowered floor noise, changed some cabling.....and lo and behold the sound improved considerably. I also learned a valuable lesson.

On my system this Dire Staits shm sacd has phenomenal sound. No doubt about it.

I have several Shm sacds that sound astonishing on my system and are reference quality. Yet when one reads the reviews of others on line.......I could scarcely believe how negative they sounded.

How does one person hear beautiful analogue sound, great dynamic range, a perfect mid range and extended treble while the other reviewer hears horrible digititis in the extreme, a grating and ear piercing treble region and lousy compression that causes them to stop listening??? I recommend said disc while the other reviewer trashes it and warns any prospective buyer to beware and avoid said disc.

So who is right or who is wrong with the music review??

The three words I try to use often are "ON MY SYSTEM"...SUCH AND SUCH A DISC SOUNDS LIKE THIS.

If we are purchasing the same discs I suspect we are fans of the same music and have a inkling as to how said title is supposed to sound..........since we've listened to said disc over many years most of the time. So I would never ...ever say that that person has bad musical taste because they have a different opinion of the discs sound quality.. That IS dishonest and disrespectful?

I need to find out why they hate the sound of the sacd and why I love it.

I never cease to be shocked and a tad troubled by the complete 160 degree..polar opposite reviews that I read. They are not my experience with said sacd's

WE should be asking the real important question. This being why this is.

I have more than a strong suspicion that the stereo system has a lot to do with it. Not the transfer or mastering. This has been my experience over the years from my own tinkering on my system and the improvements therein. I don't want anyone to think I am bragging. I have a modest system that I tweak. I read books on sound improvement. Its not all big bucks with me.

Cheers,
Rembrandt

I said much the same @SHF the other day ("on my setup, in my room, to my ears..") when talking about the subjective sound quality of a particular record.. then there's all the added elements of things like tone/eq controls etc.. whether your setup has them or you bypass them.. so many variables.. there will be things more people can agree on than not I guess such as extreme loudness, DRC, tape imperfections/drop out/hiss, mix elements.. but these often go unremarked upon, so we all hear things differently, the list (and the listening) goes on..

analogue, TOTALY AGREE.
The past few days I've been reading some very poor quality threads and some of the ridiculous one liner negative reviews that have been placed and frankly beginning to get disengaged with SACD.net and the conversations.

Thank you for restoring my interest.

"analogue" has reviewed 313 SACD's on this site. Here is the breakdown of his reviews.

4-5 star - 306
3 1/2 star - 5
3 star - 2
2 1/2 & below - 0

Amazing! All SACD's have good sound quality.

My system must not be resolving enough.

There are also many SACD tape transfers from the fifties and sixties which have 5 star ratings for sound quality. Makes one wonder if there has actually been any progress in recording technology and quality in the past 50-60 years?
