I will try that setting. The way I have my system set up:

The HDMI output from the Bluray player goes to the TV and then from the TV to the AVR by optical digital. My AVR does not have HDMI inputs.

Sadly, the only way you will get multi-channel SA-CD is via HDMI; that's how it works.

You now have two choices; either retain your current system configuration or start planning for a new AVR. Fortunately, OEM are now starting to release new models and great savings are possible on previous years models. I would act sooner rather than later on this if that's the path you want to choose.

So, even though the output is through HDMI, because of the route the signal takes (Bluray to TV via HDMI and then TV to AVR via optical digital) I cannot hear multichannel SACD?

Thanks....

Oh, yeah. Sorry to confirm the bad news. You'll need a new AVR or a player that can do multichannel analog.

Best buy a new Sony AVR with HDMI inputs/outputs

Well... I finally broke down and bought a new AVR with HDMI inputs and now I have my SACD multi-channel sound back and it's wonderful! I so wish that new CDs were being mastered in this format, but I guess that's beyond hope! Thanks to all that answered my question!

That's great; hope you're enjoying it.

Solution to the 2-channel source dilemma is Dolby ProLogicII-Music DSP.

Depending upon the quality of source material, DPLII-Music is quite effective at creating a realistic multi-channel presentation from 2 channel sources.

EDIT2: http://www.dolby.com/us/en/consumer/technology/home-theater/dolby-pro-logic-ii.html

Also DPLII-Cinema DSP for 2-channel audio from video sources.
