Discussion: Mahler: Symphony No. 6 - Stenz

if this is as good as his 7th....

but why on 2 discs, when the timings (81.03) are comparable to Nott's on 1 disc (80.25). What's the limit for SACD?

I venture to say that Oehms wants to milk the customer dry. Their set price of EURO 31 is bloody expensive for 1 symphony that everybody has already got at least 10 times over.

PS: also not very wise NOT to put 3 movements on 1 disc and the finale on the last, so as to satisfy those who are not happy with Stenz's choice of order between the Scherzo and Andante.

It's the CD layer that sets the limit. 81 minutes is possible on CD, but I'm not sure about the CD layer of a hybrid SACD.

Has anyone listened to this one yet? Among the way too many M6s I already have on SACD, this one is strikingly good, including the 1st movement, which on most of the SACD versions I have never really convinces.
Both sound and performance are excellent, just as his amazing Mahler: Symphony No. 7 - Stenz.
I hesitated to purchase this one, as after all the obligatory Mahler-cyclitis (not the medical variant) I was a bit tired of Mahler, but I'm glad I did.

I think this is the longest hybrid in my collection Mahler: Symphony No. 9 - Gilbert at 82'22".

This one is the longest hybrid Tchaikovsky: Nutcracker - Jarvi
A total of 84'35.

I just received this 88 minute RBCD! I haven't played it yet, but it has received great reviews for both the sound and the playing.

Now you're making me regret passing up on Mahler: Des Knaben Wunderhorn - Stenz a couple of weeks ago. I found a copy on sale, but I was buying so many other SACDs at the time. Now I MUST go back. ;-) Glad to hear it's as amazing as the 7th. I also have and love Stenz's performance of the 5th. I know what you mean about Mahler overload, though. LOL!
