If anyone's interested : earlier in this thread I was talking about Mahler: Symphony No. 2 - Mehta being around 700$ or 600€... It's back at approximately 38€. And I don't think this is a reissue... surely some last copies found... DON'T WAIT !!!

I've taken a punt on it and bought the copy that was available for sale.

I had a quick listen on the web beforehand and some of it sounds very impressive, especially the finale. My favourite symphonic finale thus far is Shostakovich's 5th, which when conducted at a reasonably brisk tempo, is hugely exhilarating; admittedly however, when conducted in a slow and staid tempo, is a somewhat miserable affair. Anyway, I look forward to giving Mahler's 2nd a spin :)

Received it yesterday, I'll give it a spin this evening right after work. Let's share opinions once we have both listened :-)

I only have another version of the 2nd to compare with from the Mahler: Symphonies Nos. 1-10 - Zinman boxset, but that'll be enough, it is a good box. Would love to get the Mahler: Symphonies Nos. 1-9 - Gergiev as well !

We'll see if this replaces my favorite finales : sonically, Ravel: Bolero - Boulez (comes from a 44.1/16 master, but what a sonic treatment !!!) and musically, Beethoven: Symphony No. 9 - Furtwängler, a monster of ferocity and inevitability...

Wow, you really like Mahler :D

I look forward to hearing your thoughts on his 2nd Symphony as it's totally new to me.

I'm thinking Rolling Stones are just reissues of the same masterings as before. Same as they've been using for ten years now. I wish ABKCO would allow remastering again.

The Dire Straits S/T was a bit bright. Would be nice if they would redo that too.

Doubtful these SHM~SACD 'reissues' will be remasters.......just repressings of existing masters.

The only consolation: the reissues are almost 1/2 the price of the original SHM~SACDs and especially attractive since CDJapan is offering 10% bonus points good on future purchases.

That even the current SHM~SACDs have dropped below $40 for the first time in my memory is an additional bonus especially with the elaborate new packaging.

The early Stones recordings were never sonic marvels to begin with and there is only so much engineers can accomplish with these 40+ year old analogue recordings, at least at present, with their VERY limited dynamic range!

And IMHO, the BD~A Grrrrr which contains 50 bona fide Stones Hits on decent equipment embodies in 96/24 overkill for what is contained on those Stones master tapes. Maligned in some circles, it sounds great!

I have two questions for others more experienced than me:
1. Supertramp, Breakfast in America. It appears to me on this thread that you are looking forward to the SHM SACD version to be released. Does this mean the Blu Ray Audio version that is relatively new is not up to the quality of the upcoming SACD?
2. The upcoming SHM SACD reissues? As I am new to purchasing the current SACD's I am wondering if those of you who had purchased them on the first SACD release that it is possible that you might be saying the SACD reissues are not as good as originals? Or possibly could they be better? I know I am asking a futuristic question but some might have an answer for this.
BTW: I seem to enjoy ordering either through Amazon or Acoustic Sounds.

I can answer question 1: I have both the SHM-SACD and the Blu ray Version of Breakfast in America. The SHM-SACD version is far better sounding than the Blu Ray.

Way cheaper to just order from CDJapan, especially if you order more that one disc.

I'll see if I can give some sort of answer.

Unfortunately, I do not own the SHM-SACD version of this release. I was simply too slow in deciding to order it, by which time it had either sold out at the places where I would normally order (all as mentioned by you and hooperthom), or available only at prices that I'm not prepared to pay.

I do not yet own a BD-capable player, but as these discs are not hybrid/reverse compatible, I haven't bought the album. Looking around at what various people have to say regarding the BD-A/SACD, all I can say is welcome to the world of hi-fi/recorded music, i.e. I cannot see consensus. I do wonder though, whether some people claim the BD-A to be of lower AQ than the SACD, because the average Blu-ray player is not as high-spec/audio orientated as the average CD/SACD player. Perhaps that nonsense, but who knows?

I still wish I owned the SACD version, and could possibly be tempted to order if it was re-issued. Having said that, because I had a load of loyaty points from the online retailer hooperthom mentioned, I took the plunge and ordered the SHM-CD version. My logic, which I agree is a bit woolly, was that very little might be gained from a recording of this vintage and genre over a hi-res equivalent. I might never know for sure, but I am extremely pleased/impressed with the CD version. There was a time when I would never have said what I just did, and this CD is one of only two that I've bought over the past 5 years. I still favour SACD and DVD-A (particularly multi-channel) over CDs.

Thank you for this. It seems your consensus is correct with others regarding Breakfast in America. In regards to ordering from the Japanese venue I have to work that out. At 3 discs shipping was $117.00 and was a tiny bit more than my other way of ordering. I'll look at the math later of ordering more than 3.

Your response is valid even if you don't have the equipment needed, etc. The mixed answers on almost everything is a bit confusing and continues to teach me to trust my own instincts and ears. I have to believe that all these answers are all based on different equipment, personalities, etc. I still trust regular CD's, I am looking forward to purchasing Gary Clark Jr's Live CD.
