From Blu~Ray.com:

"4K blu ray is officially on the way. According to Victor Matsuda, Chairman of the Blu~Ray Disc Association Global Promotions Committee, the BDA expects the specs for 4K Blu~Ray to be finalized in the first half of 2015, paving the way for commercial availability by the end of the year. This means we can expect to see actual 4K Blu~Ray movies/players available in stores by Christmas next year.

Apart from the jump to 4K resolution {3840 x 2160p)}, we can also expect 4K BD to support higher frame rates (up to 60fps), an expanded color gamut along with high dynamic range (HDR), as well as HEVC/H265 encoding to compress 4K movies more efficiently and allow for higher bit rates. The group is currently exploring the possibility of increasing the disc capacity to 66GB or 100GB.

The news was confirmed by representatives on the show floor at IFA 2014 in Berlin which opened its doors to visitors yesterday."

What this means for BD~A is uncertain but expect sparks to fly when this becomes a reality.

I'm sure OPPO will be at the forefront of this newer technology, as well!

I realize that NHK Japan is already jumping the gun with 8K but one step at a time, Hoop!

Overkill, IMHO...unless you're planning to install a 140" screen in your home theater!

You'd be surprised at how many people I know who still don't have a BD player even though it upsamples DVDs and plays RBCD, as well (and then some)!

I've decided that I won't be a first adopter and will wait until my plasma dies. Movies right now look just fine to me. There's no need to go overboard with 4k, IMHO.

My advice, Hoop: If you want to experience 8K here and now... Look Out The Window!

Or is that 16K?

"Ruggedly handsome" Dutchman (8x10" Glossy photo, please): Plasmas don't die....they just get replaced with OLED panels!

Well, one thing I won't do is buy any 4k blurays. The insanity of rebuying these things has to stop.

Agreed. I'm sure the upsampling apparatus on the 4K BD players will be more than adequate.....which is why I always try to purchase current BD~Vs with high video/audio scores.

Then there's the challenge of convincing your other half that the 22.2 surround system for 8k is necessary. :O
