Not a very glowing review. Think I'll go for the Naxos RBCD for a penny on Amazon MP.

A very glowing review (*****/*****) at the always critical klassik.com

http://magazin.klassik.com/reviews/reviews.cfm?TASK=REVIEW&RECID=28168&REID=15721

and a positive review (8/8) by David Hurwitz (comparing the disc to recordings by the likes of Litton, Thomas and Bernstein)

Personally, I think Hurwitz is pretty much spot on, but on the other hand, the 1st and 2nd symphonies are still very much traditional pieces of work, which the klassik.com review rightly points out while highlighting the excellence of Davis's interpretation. I am curious as to how Davis will handle the less traditional/more dissonant works in Ives's canon in the forthcoming instalments, esp. the Robert Browning Overture.

Good news for the Ives aficionado: volume 2 in Andrew Davis's cycle of orchestral works for Chandos will be released at the tail end of the year.

Works on vol. 2:
A Symphony "New England Holidays"
Three Places in NEw England
Central Park in the Dark
The Unanswered Question

That leaves at least Symphonies 3 & 4, & the stupendous Robert Browning Overture for volume 3. I'm wondering whether the Orchestral Sets 2 & 3 will also be recorded.

Good news, indeed!

Thanks for the heads up!
