Oppo came out with the 980H and 981 at around the same time. The 980H was built to have superior analog audio out, the 981 was built to have superior video upscaling. Basically both upscale video and both do SACD, but where they spent extra money on each player varies between audio and video. Oppo's comment on how it was superior to the earlier audio-centric 970h is:

The tonal qualities of the DV-980H should surpass that of the DV-970HD. The main reason for this is that we hand selected new capacitor and resistor manufacturers, redesigned the DAC layout, are using an improved Cirrus Logic CS4361 DAC and the latest, heavily modified MTK solution for increased audio decoding fidelity. The end result is a system that is more robust and refined over our previous DVD player designs.

Back in the day (c. 2007-08), I was thread OP at avforums.com for that 980H DVD player. I was keen of it at the time but consensus of opinion, was that it had major problems with PAL video. In a PAL country, that's a serious faux pas. It was better with NTSC video.

That's the specific reason I chose the Pioneer DV-610 at the time, as it's video design was intended for PAL use in a PAL country. Much better bit of kit than the other player.

BTW, I still have the DV-610 and it's sitting still sitting next to my Sony BDP-790, which will soon be replaced with either a Sony BDP-S7200 or the new BDP-S7500 when it's released later this year.

Sounds like the option of choosing a better audio player has been there before the 93 and 95.

Well I've given up with the option of using a SACD player in my bedroom Headphone setup.

Instead I'll just use HD downloads onto my Pono Player (DAP)

I wish I knew how to get the few SACDs I have onto my PC for uploading to the Pono.

We're not hiding it, it violates copyright law and is verboten on this board. You should be able to find out about it in 30 seconds using Google.

Sorry for the earlier implication.
As you can tell I erased it shortly after I posted it.

Googling only brings up the PS3 technique.
