received it today, the new 2014 Steven Wilson stereo mix sounds mono.

Another (small?) issue is at the back of the case: it says Dolby Digital 5.1 where it should be 5.1 LPCM and DTS 5.1 where it should be 5.1 DTS HD MA
It wouldn't surprise me if they just copied the codecs from the the DVD included in the box set.

The mixes are:

2.0 LPCM 24bit/96kHz (original mix)
'2.0' LPCM 24bit/96kHz (2014 Steven Wilson mix)
5.1 DTS HD MA 24bit/96kHz
5.1 LPCM 24bit/96kHz

Any positives?

Oh yes, definitely! The original mix sounds great! The Steven Wilson mix is less bright and has more bass, but I really did not think it was mono. But will check that again. All in all, for the original mix alone it is worth buying. Can't comment on the 5.1 mix.

I listened to the first track of original Virgin CD with headphones. The mix of the instruments and vocals focusses heavily on the center of the stereo base, almost mono. The only sound that is placed closer to the left and right channels is reverb.

I am tempted to agree with Ear.
It still sounds mono to me but don't thinkt it actually is.

Don't know whether this is the result of Wilson's artistic choice or whether something went wrong.

Yes, the original stereo mix sounds great.

I think I can put my finger on it now. The stereo stage is practically the same. BUT the new mix is much more on the dry side. The record sounds a little more like rock and less then 80's stadium rock. Also it is a little quieter, so one has to crank it up more, to get the full sound. Since a lot of reverb is gone, the stereo field seems even smaller than it is already. I actually like the new mix now. It sounds less dated. Don't get me wrong, I like the 80's stuff and you still get that feeling and I love the original mix. But it is really nice to hear the songs a little tighter.

Give it a try! I can recommend this HFPA.

The Steve Hoffman thread has a post saying that Universal is aware of mistake on this disk and is making new disks

Oh well, I liked it.

But apparently there have been problems with the 5.1 mix as well.

What's wrong with the 5.1 please?

(the world doesn't need a 2nd replacement disc!)

I read two reviews on amazon Germany, with complains that Jims voice was barely audible and with center speaker and rears dominating the mix.
I cannont verify that, since I have no surround speakers at the time of writing.
