Thank for the review, Colin.

What did you compare the Sony to?

Other Sony's - XB940, XB770 XB780 (all SACD); XB920, XB930, XB930E. Perhaps I should broaden my horizons!

PS to the review - I would like to try, perhaps, the NJM2114 op-amp in this machine, to give it a little more 'air'. If others have a view on this chip I would welcome a posting.

Regards

If you do a Web search on the op amp suggested you will not find it in anyones top list.Just a shade better than 5532s...Rather its the target for upgrading with something like AD826 which is still less that 4gbp.Heres an old link that may be of interest.Personally if all the resistors and caps arent changed I dont think with any mods you are getting worthwhile improvements.Im Beginning to its like painting the Forth Bridge with my Denon.

Thank you for the info and link. The 5532's are still in the MC output and provide and interesting comparison.

The 6172 (tweaked) offers an infinitely more exciting and involving soundstage than the 5532, is jam-packed with 3-dimensionality and the choice between the two is a no-brainer. But there is an element of air and space missing, with reverb tails and distant reverb in particular being suppressed. I do wish I could combine the attributes of both chips. It has been suggested that the 2114 is a possibility - being considerably more refined than the 5532, or perhaps the AD825/6 is a contender?

I just went out and bought one of these DVPNS92Vs and can only agree with the other comments posted.

If, like me you are upgrading from one of the series of Sony machines mentioned, it will be a quantum leap in MC. Bass mangament is much better with a more accurate level matching of each channel and this helps the soundstage, especially front to back with accurate centre channel matching. You can also programme speaker distances which must also help although the range is not accurate enough( only 0.2m increments).

I heard Joe Rasmussen's stereo mods and was greatly impressed.Difficult to compare as the set up was in effect a total new system butI was immediately struck with its added richness, air and detail.I will be getting a mod for the MC outputs in the next few months and report back then.

The player is a great bargain and if you are tempted, give in and get one!
