The Quad mix is supposedly different from the more blended 5.1 mix. A lot of Quad mixes seem to be quite discrete with more channel separation than 5.1. This Best of also includes 4 tracks not included in the Perception Box set. Jon over on QQ is really psyched about this one.

Joe Cocker - With a Little Help from my Friends seems to have a weak Quad mix. Jon and others are not too keen on this one, Ralph. But... Do you have any info to the contrary? I know you had quite a bit of experience with Quad back in the day.

The Perception box has ALL the albums with bonus cuts and videos, etc.

What four cuts are you referring to, Brett?

Had QUAD back in the day, and except for my QUAD discreet Open Reels NEVER had any luck with the SQ, QS, CD~4 discs............today with better turntables and associated equipment, I'm sure the discs sound better but I was a poor starving student back then and didn't have any fancy schmancy equipment.

Thanks for the info regarding the weak Cocker Quad remix. Better to have it in stereo than have another bad stereo upmix. I have the RBCD and it sounds fantastic so the AF Stereo SACD should be stellar, IMHO....an amazing album.

I don't want to start any false rumors or anything. I am quoting what was said over on QQ. Actually, it's not the songs themselves but rather the surround mixes that are not in the Perception Box set.

"... but 4 tracks from the first album not in 5.1(on Perception)... 3 from the first album and 1 from ABSOLUTEY LIVE."

And... "Yeah the first Doors album is more like 3.0 mix L, C, R is about it. I haven't listened to it in forever and just popped it in today. The quad mixes blow it away."

Sorry if I am confusing everyone. I haven't fact checked all this. But, in comparison with the Perception Box set, there appears to be a little more to the original 1973 Quad mix used for AF's Best of the Doors SACD. It might not simply be a matter of 4.0 vs 5.1.

I am (was?) one of those in support of a Q8 source being used to make a 4.0 remaster for Joe Cocker. This is the discussion that had Adam and others rolling their eyes. Both Jon and Brian have heard the old Quad mix. They said its not very discrete and nothing to get excited about. And I'll take their word for it. So, we probably won't be getting Joe Cocker in 4.0...not anytime soon at least.

A quality 2-ch stereo mix sounds pretty good to me too, Daddy-o. ;-)

Lute,
Are you referring to Best of the Doors being initially released in 1973 in Quad only (it was not released in stereo until 1980). That was at the time of the major marketing strategy for quadraphonic and big push undertaken by the record companies. This original release does have a reputation as a quality Quad particularly in reel-to-reel.

Yes, we're talking about the 73 quad mix. As you say, it has a good reputation. This is why it's caused quite a stir over at QQ. Everyone who's heard it over there has only good things to say about it. The old quad reels are going for a pretty penny on the used market. Now, we all have a chance to listen to this release in all its Quad glory.

I have that Doors QUAD Reel....but haven't played it in years....along with about 50 other QUAD Reels.

The only positive I can say about the early QUAD albums......the master tapes were in pristine condition when they were struck.

I would love to know how Light My Fire sounds since it was basically 3 track w/4th track utilized for overdubs.

But when I heard the recent Monster Music 5.1 remaster of Sketches of Spain from the original three track masters, it was amazing what they were able to extract for rear channel placement. Its not discrete, per se, but the rears tremendously add a gravity to the mix that one doesn't experience in stereo.

I am SO tempted to fire up my Teac A2340SX Open Reel deck and dig those reels out of mothballs....with it's outboard Dolby b processor (8 analogue wires necessary to make the hook~up).......hmmmmm!

The Worst Of The Jefferson Airplane, anyone......yeah, have that one too...along with Jefferson Starship's "Dragonfly," "Red Octopus" and "Spitfire" and they're all (4) dolby b encoded.

Four ripe candidates for the AF QUAD treatment.......that's if the Quad masters survived or are in usuable condition.

Rammie, does your TEAC still record and playback w/o problems?

Have NO idea. Haven't played it in years. I do remember taking it in for service quite frequently as it was under warranty and there was a TEAC dealer near my college In Long Island.

Bought that "beast" with summer job money and typing up term papers for $1 per page.

The Open Reels were cheap back then but then relative to what I was making (minimum wage)....I suppose they were pricey but now I see those QUAD reels (and mine are in excellent condition) are commanding up to $1K each on e~bay. C.R.A.Z.Y!
