dear terence, thanks for the review, - am very familiar with TAcet DVDAs, but could you perhaps compare the performances to others, incl some already on SACD? I ask because i've never heard of the conductor and am a little bit sceptical about some of the ensembles TACET chooses to record. Regards, B

OK brenda, i'll be listening again tomorrow, and will do so with your post in mind. i'll reply thereafter. all i'll say for now is that the interpretation on this disc struck me as just as successful as the recent haitink release of symphony 7, which i enjoyed greatly. sonically the TACET is in a different league altogether, and overall much the better purchase (though also of course more expensive!).

hi brenda, after another listen this evening i'm now in a position to say more.

re. your reservations about what the "polish chamber philharmonic orchestra" sound like, i'd say that on this showing they are of a standard similar to, say, the scottish or english chamber orchestras - i.e pretty good!

strings are resinous and not afraid of attacking accents when they have to (which is often in these two symphonies), woodwind bright and chirpy.

conductor rajski's readings are totally unmannered, and provide that relatively rare service of simply delivering the music straight and uncluttered, with no obtrusive "interpretive" agenda.

the sound i have already written about. if the performances were ordinary, the sound wouldn't in itself be a redeeming feature. as it is, the combination of excellent performances with outstanding and very innovative sonic realizations make this for me a disc unique (and uniquely enjoyable) in my listening experience.

Terence, thank you for your post. I have been a fan of
Tacet since their earliest multi-channel releases, the Bach Bandenburg, Concerto's. I would not have bought another Beethoven Symphony except for my knowledge of Tacet's approach to music. So of course I ordered it. Thanks again.

terence, thanks for that extra note, - I'll see if i can get hold of it. Regards, B

If you like this sort of thing then it's for you but I say:

Phooey.

I will never buy a disc that presents sound like this - to me it's fraud and a it's a waste.

But what the hey, I'll be 66 in July and grew up thinking HiFi was intended to approach the sound of performers in a concert hall (wherein the listener is seated in presumably the "best seat in the house"). With a good hall that most certainly is NOT in the middle of the orchestra.

with respect, it's completely ridiculous to call what TACET is doing a "fraud".

if it is a fraud, then so is every 78 rpm release ever made (nothing like "performers in a concert hall"), every mono LP ever released (nothing like "performers in a concert hall"), and arguably every stereo LP and CD ever released too (more like "performers in a concert hall", but still essentially artificial).

recording is of necessity an artificial medium (i.e. not the real thing, never can be), and TACET accept you can't EVER actually reproduce the concert hall experience. they are actually trying to achieve something very different - to explore how current technology can enhance the listening experience of the HOME listener. the possibilities here are very different from the "live" concert hall experience, and can be extremely revealing and exciting - in my experience much more so than the majority of two-channel stereo releases.

there's no replacement for live concerts, and TACET is in no sense trying to supplant them. what i maintain is that they most certainly ARE providing a listening experience in the home which is comparable in excitement and - yes - MUSICALITY to the best concert hall experiences. in certain respects it can arguably be even better.

if you don't like the results, fine - people should enjoy their music whatever way they want to. but calling them "fraudulent" is really to miss the above points completely, and to cheaply denigrate the efforts of an extremely committed, genuinely innovative company.

Sorry terence, but I think you are wrong. To get as close as possible to a concert situation must be every serious record company´s goal. Pentatone, Channel and others do this with great excellence, as does LSO Live.

I agree with windsurfer and would also call what Tacet does a fraud, or a gimmick maybe.

it's neither a fraud nor a gimmick. which TACET releases have you and windsurfer actually listened to? i'd be interested to know your impressions.
