It's recorded at a lower level than usual for Pentatone, so crank up the gain about six decibels or so. The dynamic range is restricted, quite realistically, as if there were a fidgety, expectorant audience in attendance and not an empty hall. In multichannel, there is no muddiness in complicated passages. It's a gorgeous recording.

These Berliners have popped up on a few labels of late and it could be that the recording set used is built in at the hall to cater for regular live to air broadcasts, in which case it could be a PCM recording at 88kHz rather than DSD with Polyhymnia's involvement more with the editing. Same thing happens at the Concertgebouw where there just isn't enough room to have two recording sets side-by-side.

These same Berliners performed Pentatone's ten-opera Wagner series, which Pentatone disclosed were recorded in PCM Hi-Res, whatever that means. There's no such disclosure on this Strauss disc, so I assume it's DSD.

What you point out Steve about their previous recordings would draw me to the opposite conclusion on the new disc and rather reinforces the suspicions I mentioned.
