Hamelin is the rock star of the piano world...as a homer (ie, from Dallas) I eagerly await this recording. Now if they would re-record his Schumann fantasy and symphonic etude, that would be awesome.

I suppose its too late now but I hope Hyperion release this as a 5 rather than 4 channel recording, and that we are not lost somewhere up the back of the hall!

I won't be buying it if it is a 4 channel recording.

me neither - and i'll need some convincing to buy it at all after the mess hyperion made of the hough/litton rachmaninov concertos.

i listened to that again the other day and it sounded as bad as ever - SUCH a tinny piano, among other things....

Well, there is hope in that the recent Monteverdi Vespers is 5 not 4 channels (whether this was a one-off though...)

is the brahms live like the rachmaninov?

Interestingly, the Rach Rhapsody was not recorded in concert, but in the same hall almost a year earlier. However, it is just as poorly done as the four concertos. I wonder if was really the sound the artists wanted, or perhaps they just weren't interested in sonic considerations. In either case, the live venue for the concertos doesn't appear to be the problem.

As much as I would like to purchase the upcoming Hyperion Brahms, I will wait for some reviews. "Fool me once,..."

I know this has been endlessly discussed, but just to be sure, it's only the multi-channel layer that has poor sound?

I haven't listened to the stereo SACD layer, but Classics Today reviewed both the MCH and the stereo in separate reviews. They liked the stereo but quite properly blasted the MCH.
