Is the Rite a bit advanced for your taste...gosh.

Don't be so patronising.

To the person who called my opinions "pretentious claptrap", oh yes I am.

Personally I find the Rite to be full of tunes, and a great listen, besides the drama (not to mention the incredible rhythms and harmony). A few years ago there was a televised staging of the original choreography - very primitive and powerful. The Rite is an extremely accessible work, in my view, as is most of Stravinsky's work (I would sure like to see the symphonies -Symphony in C, Symphony in Three Movements, and the greatest of all, the Symphony of Psalms, recorded in multichannel sound in great performances). The man was the Picasso of music (have a drink at the Stravinsky fountain in Paris and see if you don't agree).

I don't find Schoenberg to have nearly the level of inspiration of Stravinsky's music. A couple of years ago MTT conducted the SFSO in performances of "5 Pieces for Orchestra" and "Das Lied von der Erde', which were composed in the same year. While 5 Pieces is a seminal work in its own way (I believe it is a work that started music down a dead end which minimalism finally rescued us from - but that is a very long subject) there is no doubt that 5 Pieces is a throw away work compared to the emotional wallop packed by a work like DLVDE. I play Schoenberg when I am trying to make music history connections, I play Mahler for the soul.

What I've heard of George Lloyd is that he is an OK, conservative composer. There's room for this in life. I feel the same way about Brahms. :-)

Hmmm - better add 'patronising' to the 'elitism'....

I don´t get it, maybe I´m a fool. This music is so boring. A third rate symphonist with pieces that outstays its welcome. Meandering is the word I seek, I think. Like Bax without the talent. One or two good ideas, but no more.
Am I wrong? If so, please enlighten me!

Well At least we are back to talking about Lloyd..
Question...Does everything we listen to have to be The Best ,written by the Best, or Performed by the Best or even played by the Best on the Best playback system..
Maybe this will enlighted someone...dont know..Best I can come up with..
Thought?
Maybe anything is only the Best until something better comes out to beat it.
What do you do then, throw it away...(all sacd oto Dave@Buckley.in.N_Wales ...(wet cold and damp,ok not as cold as somewhere else which must be making someone elsemore miserable and grumpier than me)
I am quite happy to have nearly 400 sacds..Cant say which is Best...
PS I dont think this is the best Lloyd symphony..or the best recording but it sure adds to my collection...
erm Best wishes...

Dave,
not all music have to be best, not at all. But it is so funny that as soon as someone openly dislikes some composer or other he/she is under attack. I don´t care if you and other people like the music of Lloyd, please feel free to do so. But please let me dislike it without having to recieve comments like the ones from little saffron.

What I originally said about Lloyd was that I thought his pieces were far too long and that I didn´t understand them.

Cheers mate.

which was much more disparaging than what you are saying now.

Lloyd's musical heroes were Berlioz and Verdi. The influence of the former is shown in his clean lines and transparent orchestration, and the latter in his melodic invention. These qualities are what makes his music so enjoyable for both many listeners and performers. If you can't enjoy or appreciate Lloyd then that is your loss.

Bruce, it's a matter of taste again. I'm a Lloyd fan and find his music anything but stale; rather, positive, upbeat, therapeutic...and so on. I think he's an excellent second-rate composer! I'm sure we won't fall out over this :-)
And I would say I agree with wehecht that the SACD replacements really do show an improvement over the original issues, so I guess I'll have to buy them all all over again.

Peter:
You forgot the part about "Like Bax without the talent."
It's funny how some people dish things out without concern, but become sensitive when other take offense!
As to the Lloyd issue: I'm not a big fan, but I have found them enjoyable enough to buy and listen to on Super Audio. I won't pull them out often, but I'll enjoy them once in a while. I definitely give a hats off to Albany for bringing them out rather than another Mahler or Shostakovich disc!

That is exactly what I am saying now. "Outstays its welcome" - overlong!
Where in the world is the loss for not liking Lloyd? There is quite a lot of other music around, you know. What an incredibly stupid comment.
