The new Onkyo HDMI 1.3 receivers will support DSD processing directly through HDMI.
The 505 and 605 won't, but the 805, 875 and 905 will.
They will also support TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio decoding.

Hopefully, based on that article posted interviewing the update guys, DSD may come at some point to the PS3.

Yamaha's new DSP-AX761 receiver (¥ 110,250) announced today also supprts DSD via HDMI v1.2a, plus a host of other fashionable formats.

You don't need a HDMI 1.2/3 receiver to be able to hear multichannel SACDs via the PS3. At this point in time, the PS3 decodes the DSD to PCM at starting at 88.4kHz and up to 176.4kHz.

To use the PS3 as the multichannel SACD device using your HDMI receiver, the setup must be PS3->HDMI cable->receiver->HDMI cable->HDTV. If you don't have a HDMI-capable HDTV, then the video output can be component video.

Under Setup, choose HDMI. Then let the PS3 figure out the best audio bitrates of your receiver. Once it does that, you can then check the list of bitrates your receiver supports. If it doesn't support 176.4kHz, you might want to upgrade. After setup is finished, you're ready to play SACDs and Blu-ray Discs (BDs)

(Some receivers are only video passthrough ie they do not take the audio stream and amplify it. Avoid these receivers. Also some receivers have low LFE (bass/subwoofer) issues when using HDMI so avoid that as well.)

If you're using a hybrid multichannel SACD, the PS3 will display three options on the Cross Media Bar (XMB). The first is Audio CD. The second is Stereo SACD. The third is multichannel SACD. Choose either one and playback will commence. If it's a hybrid stereo SACD, you only get two options; the same goes if it is a multichannel SACD-layer only disc.

Hi All

Thought i would let you know of my experience in using the PS3 as a SACD player.

I have a Marantz SR-7001 receiver that has HDMI V1.2a input and can process DSD. The PS3 is hooked up by HDMI only.
I stuck a SACD into the PS3 and the receiver said it was receiving DSD and was outputting multichannel. Problem was no sound out of the speakers!

So i went into the menu and selected the stereo SACD section - this time smazing 2 channel sound. So i went back to the multi channel section and this time the sound came out in multichannel but the receiver display said it was receiving it in Multichannel PCM the DSD light had gone dark.

So the only conclusion i can make is that there is a problem with the way the PS3 outputs DSD or my receiver cant process the way the PS3 outputs DSD and so the PS3 returns to outputting it in Multi PCM.

The sound is amazing though. And ordinary CDs sounded noticebly inferior. (To my non-audiophile ears anyhow)

Apologies for the long winded post. Excellent forum as well!

Tony

I'm also hoping that Sony will add DSD over HDMI functionality in a future firmware upgrade for the PS3. The Yamaha RX-2700 receiver I bought earlier this year has HDMI 1.2a and does support DSD over this connection. Once the PS3 can send DSD to my Yamaha receiver, I'll then be able to hear my concert recordings in FULL fidelity. I recently purchased a Korg MR-1 digital field recorder ( http://www.korg.com/gear/info.asp?a_prod_no=MR1&category_id=3 ) which can record in 1-bit/2.8Mhz DSD format. I use the MR-1 to record concerts and just started getting into recording nature sounds. The sound quality of my 1-bit DSD recordings is simply amazing. I can transfer my 1-bit DSD recordings from the MR-1 to my VAIO notebook over USB and use the SonicStage Mastering Studio software included with the VAIO to create a DSD Audio disc which my PS3 can now play since the 1.6 firmware upgrade. Playback of DSD audio discs already sounds incredible with the 24-bit/176.4 decimated PCM the PS3 currently outputs over HDMI. I'm looking forward to hearing how they'll sound once the PS3 can output DSD!

I'm guessing because the DST i-bit signal is converted to a higher bit rate PCM signal, this is some type of feature to minimise "dither ringing."
What throiws me is the selection is either "off" or "type 1" meaning other types in future

Well, today Sony announced firmware upgrade version 1.90, to be released tomorrow. Among many other improvements (in gaming and video areas) apparently they're adding a "type 2" to the bit mapping menu.

See http://www.watch.impress.co.jp/av/docs/20070723/sce.htm

More details to be expected here: http://www.jp.playstation.com/ps3/update/index.html

Now the question is: what does type 2 mean and what's the difference between type 1 and 2?

I upgraded to the next best Sony receiver (STR-DG710). I put in an SACD and all three sound options came up on the menu (CD/SACD stereo/SACD multi). It tried to play in multi-channel but it only came out of the front speakers. It was actually playing in 5.1 but the rear speaker info was lost. I give up!

Would someone please help the handicapped here and walk me through the settings? I'd really appreciate it!

What connection are you using?

I am more than interested in using the PS3 as my default SA-CD player as I was more than impressed with its CD playback capabilities. To this end I ditched my TEAC 7.1 and bought the new SONY 910 amp. I was immediately disappointed as its manual claims that 5.1 SA-CD playback is not available over HDMI while the PS3 claims that it is the only way to play it. So I hooked it up anyway and of course it worked and unless I am missing something, I am more than happy with the sound from my SA-CDs.

Strangely the 910 sports a dedicated SA-CD coax input: I don't get this at all -as far as I knew SA-CD can never be carried over toslink/coax -and of course it doesn't work from my Pioneer 696AV.I get an 'unlock' error message when I try (reminds me of making digital copies on MD) -can anyone shed any light? I really want the 696 to work just for the Beatles 'LOVE' DVD-A. Sa-CD is not carried over HDMI from the Pioneer either. rats.

I think they meant that the receiver doesnt support DSD over HDMI. You can use it to play SA-CD but only in (high-res) PCM since that's the only way PS3 will output it thus far.

It's odd they added SA-CD to the 'CD/CD-R in' label.

No clue what is meant by the 'unlock' message. The troubleshooting guide doesn't mention anything about this. Do you only have this when playing DVD-Audio? Or with SA-CD from your Pioneer? Both?

Note: The Pioneer manual states: "It is not possible to output SACD source from the HDMI connection of this player."
