Terence,
Do you have the Frank Strobel version on Capriccio? It has very very good mch sound for pcm. I quibble with the (I suppose) "authentic" horn sound which to me is an unfortunate choice, very unmusical - seems a gimick almost. But all told, I find this very satisfying.

The Amazon review seems to refer to the Reiner recording as being sung in English, which it is. The Schippers recording is, I recall, sung in Russian, but I don't have a copy of the Schippers performance to verify the accuracy of my recollection.

As I should have mentioned, the Slatkin performance on Mobile Fidelity is quite good, sung in Russian, and in acceptable 4.0 sound. Not really current state of the art, but very listenable.

Fafnir, now that I read the amazon review again, I see I misunderstood what he was trying to say, so thanks for clearing that up.

I have the Reiner, and IMO, it doesn't work in English; the Khachaturian coupling, though, is magnificent!
