You're welcome. ;-)

Are you REALLY considering buying a US $13,000 widget?

An oscilloscope plot from a 10kHz square wave sampled using Direct Stream Digital (green plot) and 192kHz PCM (yellow plot) in Craig Anderson's DSD to PCM comparison detailed at Surround Professional 2002.
http://www.smr-home-theatre.org/surround2002/technology/page_07.shtml

If you look at this picture, you can notice 192 kHz PCM does not approach the analog signal but the 1-bit pulse train of DSD. Keep in mind that PCM sample always starts its life as a 1-bit stream!

No, I'm not. It's over my budget and I'm very happy about my Sony SCD-XB790 (and my girlfriend's Marantz SA7001) for the time being.

Cheers!

sgb - I'm a bit confused; what do you mean by this?

Are you really saying that some SACD players can only output the RBCD layer of a hybrid disc? What happens if you only place a non-hybrid SACD in the player - how could it possibly output RBCD sound? I can't believe this is really the case but if anyone can show me otherwise I'll be very happy to change my mind.

No, I was answering the question in the previous post. IIRC, the question had something to do with whether the sound quality one would hear from an SACD were dependent on the quality of the player being used. I then went on to say that not only was this a dependent factor, so too would every other component in use place its stamp on the sound one was hearing. I should extend this to the room.

Ah - it becomes clear now, thanks.

It is not clear what version of HDMI Pioneer have supplied on your proposed choice but reading the manual I suspect it is V1.1 and so you'll require analogue connectors for the SACD outputs.

Yes, it seems to be version 1.1. Then again, it seems that hardly any SACD-player has version 1.2.

Or what?

Well, you could buy a PS3 which has HDMI v1.3 but I suspect that wasn't quite what you were after - I think most companies will wait to introduce v1.3 once HD discs have bedded in; Denon will be putting HDMI v1.3 this year into its amplifiers - no word about their disc players but I assume they won't be too far behind. It's either this or find one with iLink (several choices for SACD & Amplifier) or DenonLink (only one company for SACD & Amplifier). For the amount of money you're thinking about spending, a decent set of analogue cables (whilst not so pretty) will be fine.

I am new to SACD. I wondered what the opnions are about the quality
gain when going from ordinary CD to SACD.
I have a $1000 stereo. Will I be able to hear a clear difference on
such a cheap system, or will I have to up grade to high-end amps etc.
to experience a real quality gain?

My first SACD player was a 250.- EUR Denon DVD player with SACD option and optical CD digital output.
I did a comparison test between the digital CD output converted into analog with our 2,000.- EUR ADDA 2402 converter and the analog output from the Denon SACD player.

Both analog signals was delivered to my Sudgen Class A amp and then to my Audio Note Speakers.
The result was very clear. The SACD output was of course sounding hard compared to the analog output from our ADDA 2402, however still the analog output form the cheep SACD player contains more details and dynamic.

Get yourself a decent stereo SACD player for $1000 or more (if you prefer warm sound stay away from Denon) and you WILL hear a huge improvement over standard CD sound.

What about Marantz, e.g. 7001?
