excellent news, especially if the first release in this series (don quixote) is anything to go by.

this is a sensationally good performance of heldenleben, very significantly bettering the jansons SACD i have already.

one special point - luisi uses what is called strauss's "original ending". this means the work ends quietly "in a pianissimo with the sounds of the solo violin" above the orchestra.

i'm sure there are other recordings which do this, but i can't think of any.

hope to post a review when i get a moment, and when i have also listened to metamorphosen.

meantime, to reiterate - this is a wonderful heldenleben, 5 stars for both sound (multichannel) and performance.

I received this disc yesterday and have played it through twice. The first time I played it, I thought that I heard a ghastly editing error in the sixth section of Heldenleben - the one in which the hero calls it quits. I thought that it might be part of the alternative ending, but after listening the second time, I'm convinced this is not the case.

There appears to be an echo in the center channel that trails the front channels by several seconds. It is almost as if the center channel and one of the rear channels were swapped in editing. The effect is not the least subtle and sounds awful - bad enough to essentially ruin the recording.

I am most interested to learn if anyone has a clean copy of this recording. I haven't heard anything like this since Decca swapped the left and right channels of Solti's original RBCD issue of Brahms Sym 2.

The problem becomes quite obvious at 0:58 into track 6 and continues on through track 6 until the end of the score over 10 minutes later. It is definitely a problem with the center channel. When I play the section with only the 2 channel SACD layer, the echo vanishes, and the sound quality is, of course, greatly improved.

Thank you for checking your copy. I hope yours is OK for your sake and also so that I have at least a chance of getting a good copy if I complain enough to SONY. I can't help but think that there is no person who has the responsibility for listening to the final product before it is released. If such responsibility actually exists, perhaps it should be taken more seriously.

At least the booklet seems to have been prepared with some care. It features no less than 4 pictures of the conductor, including a centerfold. Regrettably, he does not resemble Nichole Kidman, etc.

I have encountered the same problem with the centre channel. I first noticed the echo effect at about 1:39 into track 6 where it is very striking. I thought this was a minor editing error, but as it turned out, the whole of track 6 is affected.
The stereo SACD layer is OK.

I've sent a complaining email to SonyBMG classical about this, explaining the defect, and asking if they are going to fix it and send a new recording. I'm not sure my message got thorough, however. Does "abschicken" mean send or cancel? Perhaps another victim who is fluent in German could contact them with a similar message.

It's "send".

hello,

it seems sony has serious problems releasing a flawless sacd. i remember the scriabin/stanev recording. i buyed the sacd and the sound only came from one side (see my review), then sony contacted me and made a complaint about my negative review... i sent them my sacd so that they can hear the flaw themself... some weeks later they send me an email and admitted that the sacd was crap. they made an producing error with the first 100-200 sacds. they fixed it and sent me a new sacd, without that flaw.
but its a strange thing, they always release defect sacds... and when u write a negative review they complain. ill never buy sacds from sony!
