So I'm going to be in Vienna in November and I want to get tickets to some concerts at the Musikverein. The Musikverein box office does not begin selling tickets until a month before the concert date. Does anyone know of any reputable ticket brokers who can sell me tickets well before a month out?

Thanks.

Not sure about that but if you join the Musikverein, you can book significantly earlier (which adds to the cost of the ticket but is well worth it to guarantee admission for a special concert - they practically all are!)

Becoming a member only lets you book tickets one week earlier than non-members. For 60 euros, that doesn't sound like a good deal.

I found a ticket broker in Vienna, who after talking to via email, seems legit. He's very confident that he'll be able to get me a ticket for the VPO. So I've authorized him to spend up to a certain amount. I guess I'll just have to wait to see what happens.

If you want to guarantee that you have a ticket, by all means, plan ahead. That said, I wouldn't sweat it too much, particularly in Nov. I travel to Vienna on occasion and have seen the Vienna Philharmonic a half dozen times. I've been able to get tickets sometimes from the Musikverein website (within their 30-day window). I've also walked into the box office a day or two before and been successful. If you don't mind standing, standing room tickets are almost always available. Just be aware that some concerts are sponsored by the Musikverien, and some by the Philharmoniker. For the Philharmoniker concerts, you have to buy the tickets at their office, which is about a block on away on the Ring (also been successful just walking in). There are also frequently people selling their tickets just prior to the performance at the front entrance. So you can arrive early and try that. Don't forget the Brahms Saal - also an impressive concert hall. And the Wiener Konzerthaus is also worth looking at. I've seen a number of good quartets there, including the Mosaiques Quartet.

Thanks for the insight.

I'm sure I over paid, but I guess it's worth the guarantee. The Orchestra is performing the Mahler 1, so as I see it, that's a perfect first time VPO/Musikverein experience. I also went with the broker for the Tonkünstler-Orchester Niederösterreich performing the Mahler 5. That was probably a mistake, but I do want to make sure that I hear a Mahler symphony in the Musikverein.

I plan on going to the Brahms Saal.

What's the ticket situation like with the Vienna State Opera? Will I be ok waiting to buy a month out?

For the handful of super-popular operas (Carmen, Barber of Seville, Marriage of Figaro, etc.) it can be quite a madhouse and rather difficult to find tickets. But for others (I've seen Peter Grimes, Eugene Onegin, Italian Girl in Algiers), I haven't had any difficulty.

Hey:

I have a follow up question to this. I've noticed that for some opera performances in November, they are selling a handful of the most expensive seats online right now, but only the most expensive seats. Am I right in assuming that a month or so before the actual performance they'll open up the rest of the seats for sale?

Thanks.

Good question. Since the 07-08 season doesn't begin until Sept, I would imagine this is some sort of pre-season ticket availability (or maybe season subscription?). Unless things have changed, I would certainly imagine that regular tickets would go on sale 30 days prior, as in years past.

Thanks again.
