For this discussion I included my review:

There seems to be a bit of opposing opinion in the reviews of this disc and, if you would have asked my thoughts after I had listened to it for the first time I would have tended to agree with nucaleena....not now though.

Upon second and subsequent listenings I am likeing this disc more and more. There is more depth to the backing istrumentals than I first thought and Norah's ability to interperate the material goes well beyond her unique voice. I would imagine that the character of her voice was what attracted many listeners initially.

One thought that might seem strange to some: I would really like to hear Norah do some of the material that Patsy Cline did so well, I think she would be great at it.

One big problem though: substandard material used for part of the pressing run causes "cracks" to radiate from the spindle hole of the disc after a few playings. I had that problem and have just exchanged my copy. Problem is that according to QC there is no way to identify the later discs using proper plastic from the earlier defective ones. I hope the copy I have now is one of the newer ones otherwise I'll probably have to exchange it again!

Guess what, I just got ready to play my new Norah disc and IT'S CRACKED!!!
I never even played the thing, just checked it once before. Well, back it goes for another one. What I can't quite understand is why, when they found out that the plastic they were first using was faulty, they didn't establish some way of telling which were the "new" pressings. It could have saved us all a heck of a lot of trouble!!

Anyway the disc is still worth all this hassle, its that good.

NOT me.

Her voice is that of a girl going through her puberty, phew.

That's the whole thing with this music game....preferences. In Norah's case obviously millions find her voice attractive but that does'nt mean everyone has to. If you don't like the voice why would you buy the recording or, care about it?? Hell, I've even met one or two over the years who can't stand Ella's voice....to each his own I guess.

The thing is, that you buy the recording on "spec" based on reviews (which is what happened with me and Norah) and only then find that you don't like the voice. I live a good hour and a half drive away from any decent classical or jazz- stocking record store (in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales) so reviews tend to inform my internet ordering. I guess its the same for pann.

Reviews will in no way be able to tell you if you will like the sound of someone's voice. As far as a singer goes, I think I would want to at least hear something by them before considering buying a disc full of their singing.

In my case with the disc in question I had only heard one cut and that was on a TV video but her voice intrigued me at the time so, when I happened across the disc in a store I bought it.

You can get some idea of what a particular artist sounds like by logging on to one of the on-line music dealers that offer sound bytes of the discs that they sell. CD Universe is particularly good at that. It should give you at least a rough idea of what something sounds like before you buy it.

I have read some fantastic reviews of recordings, gone out and bought them then, found that I couldn't stand them. You have to at least know the artist or type of music before investing otherwise it's a real gamble and chances are you're gonna lose some.

How true, how true. In this case, I did hear an extract from the title track on my very, very crummy laptop speakers, and quite liked it. Should have explored further, but without broadband some clips take forever to download. Anyway, as a result of the Jones experience I've now got a decent set of computer speakers to plug into my laptop whan i want to hear clips (and have plenty of time to wait for downlaod). Mind you, I wonder about the economic sense of this move, - I've only bought three dud SACDs and three others that were so-so but I haven't kept, out of 24, so thats not too bad an average. And of those three that were dud I subsequently found reviews of 2 of them (both feauturing Yo-Yo Ma ) that would have helped me save money had i found them earlier. So the only cropper I've come on the basis of reviews has been Norah. But the new PC speakers cost me as much as two SACDs, - maybe it would have been cheaper to have continued to buy on spec and reviews? Ah well, deep sigh, now back to listening.

I couldn't agree more. I was just expressing my view along this line in my previous post.
BTW, a twenty something old with a 13 year old voice! GMAB.

Sound bytes do not serve me well at all.
Along the line of *to each his own*, I prefer to buy on review, listen to it with MY sytem, then decide on its OVERALL (see, sound bytes do not serve me)merit either to keep it or sell it on eBay. The *audition fee* I paid is well worth it. My OVERALL experience is my criteria, not on voice, or recorded sound or performance, certain tracks or certain performers, alone or in combination.

IMO, most teenage women pop stars sound like Demented Chipmunks. I don't think in any way that applies in Norah's case though.
