Hi Robert.

I recall that famously you stated that any project you start will be completed. With that in mind and no stick in hand what will happen to Bergen's Prokofiev symphonic survey after Litton's now fairly imminent departure? We do so desperately need all these symphonies on SACD.

John

I believe based on concerts they have already performed or have scheduled over the next year, Bis has most of the symphonies covered. As far as the additional pieces on each disc, I know the Scythian Suite was performed in concert, but don't know if they will perform all of them prior to recording.

Robert it's been a few months since the 5th symphony was released. Perhaps you are ready to divulge what's on the next disc?

PS Really to other readers, yes I am aware of the Mariinsky news.

That is not strictly true.
We had to give up Lokshin's Symphonies and we elected to give up Villa-Lobos's Piano Music.
However, the Prokofiev cycle will be finished.

What Mariinsky news?

Robert

If you go to Andrew Litton's website, you can see that he has conducted performances of Symphonies 1, 4, and 7 over the last couple of years, and is scheduled to conduct Symphony 2 in Bergen next April. Only Robert knows the pace of the Bis release schedule, but hopefully we will see another disc before Gergiev's comes out.

I have to add that the combo of Symphony 5 and Scythian Suite was a great disc, definitely my SACD of the year so far.

There is another very fine survey appearing on Onyx from Kirill Karabits and the Bournemouth Symphony which is getting rave reviews from the UK grown-ups press but alas they are available only as 44/16 Red Books with no hi-res option at all for downloading or streaming. (2015?)

I am collecting them out of sheer loyalty but here is a fine example of performance being spoiled by SQ or rather the lack of it. The live performances were sensational.

Andrew plays it too safe on the new Bergen disc and so didn't quite light up all my stars.

That's a pity: it seems like a well-planned series (e.g. the inclusion of the Sinfonietta and the early tone poems).

Hmm. . . somehow I've ended up with a 24/96 download of the Karabits/Bournemouth recording of Symphonies nos. 3 and 7. I can't remember whether I got it from HD Tracks or from Pro Studio Masters (in Canada). I just checked a spectrograph of the last movement of the Third, and it shows a frequency range wherein the musical signals do occasionally reach above 40kHz. In general, it's a good looking spectrograph with one slight, very narrow noise band right at 20kHz.

Qobuz have them in high res 24/96. 1+2 & 4+5 & 3+7. I have not seen the 6th.

I'm late to Prokofiev symphonies and I have failed to appreciate them much before. But these Karabits releases are doing some tricks and I prefer them well ahead of Gergiev much admired LSO take. These and the future BIS releases will be my investments to acquire some tastes.

Qobuz isn't available for Chris or anyone in the US.

Didn't Qobuz say they were coming to the US at some point? ("Watch this space") Maybe I just dreamed it. ;-)
