And it seems some 'folks' can't think at all :)

Ah, but you were talking about the free market, and that governs the supply of essential services as well. You either support the principle of a free market or you don't. That's not obfuscation, it'd elucidation :)

"free market"?

Are you referring to the competitive model, the monopolistic model or the oligarchilistic (did I just make up a word?) model?

Public utilities are a very special case....at least in the U.S. Here the distribution is still monopolistic but the generation is a little different if not exactly "competitive".

Some of you amuse me with your references to "capitalism" and "free markets".

In the true competitive model a supplier can not dictate price, nor can a purchaser. The price is set where the supply curve crosses the demand curve.

:)

OK then - why don't you elucidate us all - how SHOULD the price of CD's be set? Please bless us with your great wisdom.

I seem to remember the case of Enron and other companies that pushed that to the extreme when they were in on the California power grid schemes that swindled millions of their money. Free market? I think not.

The price of all BIS SACDs is reasonable at MDT, until a few days ago they were selling at £9.75, have now reverted to £11.75 each.

The price of £10.94 excluding VAT (for all us lucky Johnny foreigners) at the SA-CD.net sponsored retailer, Crotchet, is also pretty reasonable, I have to say! And the postage and handling charge per disc seems a good deal cheaper than Amazon from any country.

No great wisdom, just common sense :) Obviously there is a basic pricing structure in place for CDs but the law of supply and demand will introduce price fluctuations. For example, scarcity means that OOP titles will fetch a premium - as we all know - but if supply is fairly constant prices should remain equally so. My initial point about the DSCH set costing £63.99 is that it represents a distortion of the free market rules because supply ISN'T an issue. Therefore Amazon ISN'T playing by the rules. At those inflated prices I bet Robert doesn't get any more from the sale than he would do at normal prices; that's hardly fair, is it?

As for utilities and the free market, in recent years a dispute between Russia and the Ukraine has led to periodic suspension of natural gas supplies to the rest of Europe. The result? Upward pressure on prices.

Oh, now I see - it isn't FAIR. So tell me wise one, who decides what is fair? I eagerly await your response.

And you keep on bringing up the cost of utilities when I never said anything about that. Can you try to keep this on topic? Let me remind you - we are discussing the price of CD's/SACD's in the market.

You are being very childish now. May I remind you it was YOU who brought up the free market issue in a discussion that was focused on the costs of CDs/SACDs. Having lost the argument - through sheer bad manners and wilful ignorance - you now resort to unreasoning abuse. I really urge you work on your social and debating skills; both need a lot of attention.

I know this discussion did start with someone pointing out the price of a BIS SACD at Amazon but, yet again, it looks like the BIS thread is being diverted off on a tangent. Would it be better to start a separate thread to discuss the wider issue of SACD pricing if people are keen to discuss it?

Krisjan, not aiming this at you in particular and do not mean any offence.

I agree - I hate to see thread pollution of this nature.
