That's amazing- Hong Kong basically has its own, autonomous SACD industry: recorded, produced and bought all right there. I notice a fair number of things from Hong Kong on Audiogon, at least relative to the rest of that half of the world. High-end audio must be really big there.

Hong Kong is a city that really combines the West and the East. Audiophiles there are true fanatics. That's why SACDs released there include everything from traditional Cantonese opera to Sarah Brightman. And from Kenny G to The Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra.

Of the 2182 SA-CDs currently listed on this site, 1869 can be obtained through one or more of the vendor links provided. This makes this site the largest "vendor" of SA-CDs in the world!

Just out of curiousity, were there any titles available in HK which were at one time announced for U.S. and/or Europe that were subsequently pulled? I'm thinking primarily of the Byrds' "Fifth Dimension," "Bitches Brew" by Miles Davis, "Child Is The Father Of The Man" by Blood, Sweat & Tears & that whole selection of Steely Dan hybrids...

Beyonce's "Dangerously In Love", on Sony, is one title that was announced for the US but subsequently pulled due to royalties issue. It is, however, available from US e-tailer yesasia.com. Otherwise, I didn't noticed any of the titles mentioned above, but perhaps I wasn't looking hard enough. A reissue of Dave Brubeck's "Time Out" on multi-channel hybrid is available in Hong Kong as well (see scan above).

The Byrds title still hasn't been released. "Bitches Brew" is available now from amazon.co.jp. The BS&T I have no info on. The Steely Dan titles are on hold ... apparently the artists didn't approve the multichannel mixes.

Stephen,

Any indications of upcoming titles from any of the music companies?

There's quite a few I've seen and will add when I have more details. On the classical side: the La Tarantella I mentioned from Alpha, from Sweden another title from Proprius and two from Caprice, it looks like one from Animato (another label new to SA-CD), more from Philips ("Poeme" from Suwanai and maybe more Uchida and Brendel), the Rachmaninov symphonies (complete 4 SA-CD set) from de Waart on Exton. Sony have three pop/rock titles out soon. In Japan, the third set of Momoe Yamaguchi re-releases. I've added the first set of Kinks already and there's more on the way. These are just some from off the top of my head.

There was little talk of DVD Audio as most people had moved on. The recently approved Dual Disc (likely to appear next year) is seen more as a distraction. To get approval by the DVD Forum, compromises have apparently been made instead on the CD side resulting in the thickness being dropped to the minimum and the track width/gap widened to compensate (hence the shorter play time). Accordingly, there are real concerns about long term readability, especially with a dual sided package more susceptible to handling. It will be interesting to see what happens if/when this is released to a wider market.

Thanks for the update Steve
I must admit I always have had concerns regarding the dual sided package.

The lack of multichannel jazz, pop & rock releases is quite conspicuous. Guess this legal dispute about publishing royalties for multiple versions of the albums has stalled a lot of titles and will continue to do so until it's resolved, despite most people not knowing anything about it...
