Fialkowska is no ordinary pianist, neither in ability nor in personal history. She has recovered from cancer in the right arm and is returning to playing 2-handed, after a period of playing piano left-hand compositions. Details:

these are the CHAMBER (i.e. one instrument per part) reductions of the concertos which are recorded.

Currently this SACD can be ordered inexpensively (7.50 Euro) via amazon.fr.

Not that it matters much in this context, but the cancer was in her left arm.

"In January, 2002 at the onset of a major European tour encompassing eight different countries, Ms. Fialkowska's career was brought to a dramatic halt by the discovery of a tumour in her left arm. After successful surgery to remove the cancer, Ms Fialkowska underwent further surgery in January 2003; a rare muscle-transfer procedure. After 18 months of performing the Ravel and Prokofiev "concertos for the left hand"; which she transcribed for her right hand she has resumed her two-handed career beginning with a tremendously successful and highly emotional recital held in Germany in January 2004."

Her recovery is very impressive! I ordered the SACD two weeks ago and is really looking forward to listening to it.

It is still one I play several times per week. The intimacy is so wonderful.

Oops! So much for writing from memory; I only remembered that she was playing the pieces for Left. The Official Falkowska site clearly says
"she was diagnosed with a cancerous tumour in her left shoulder which brought her performing career to a halt". http://www.fialkowska.com/news/Default.aspx

I am glad this recording is being received so well (I always enjoyed JF's appearances on CBC radio BEFORE the crisis and so this is like an old friend's recovery). Perhaps these one-musician-per-part performances even up the score a bit in regard to string quartets scaled-up for grand orchestra?
